Matt's chance to impress

Jon Tuxworth

His younger brother Kevin is living the high life as a Gold Coast Titan, but Matt Gordon insists he'll be more than happy with his lot when he represents Canberra against Northern Rivers at Cessnock today.

But the 24-year-old knows today's opening clash of the Country Rugby League regional championships is a chance to press his claims for an NRL call-up.

Matt was also on the Titans books for a couple of years, but he headed south citing a lack of passion and a need for a change of scenery.

He will revert to his preferred centre position today, having played most of the season at five-eighth for the Queanbeyan Blues.

''I'm happy playing country footy at the moment, it's not really fazing me but making the rep side is a plus,'' he said. ''Kevin was more the quiet achiever, we were very competitive when we were young and I think that helped both of us.

''But he just stuck to it a bit more and really wanted it.''

Competition easybeats in recent years, Northern Rivers have named a powerful line-up including former NRL stars Luke Covell, Dean Widders and Clinton Toopi.

The victor will meet the winner of the Central Coast-Newcastle clash in the final in a few weeks.

''They're going to be much improved on what they've done in the past, there's certainly no complacency from us,'' Canberra coach Simon Woolford said.
