NRL to take no action against Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy

THE NRL will not sanction Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy after he made post-match comments that were critical of referee Ashley Klein following Storm's loss to Newcastle on Saturday night.

Bellamy, who has already been fined $10,000 (with $5000 suspended) this season for missing a post-game press conference, will not be sanctioned by the league after officials reviewed his comments on Monday morning.

The Storm won't make an official complaint about Klein but will follow up privately with referees boss Tony Archer to seek clarification about some of the rulings and any areas where the team can improve its defensive practices to avoid penalties.

Bellamy was furious after his side's 32-30 loss after the siren on Saturday, a match in which Storm lost the penalty count 11-3 overall and 7-0 in the second half.

"I'm really disappointed in the way the game was refereed," Bellamy had said.

"There was 7-0 penalties [against Melbourne] in the second half (and) there's not one side worse than the other.

"Ashley Klein obviously doesn't like the way we play our footy.

"We've had that many times when we've had him this year and the penalty count, it hasn't even been close.

"Every time we have Ashley we always seem to be on the wrong side of the penalty count and a fair way on the wrong side."

Storm have lost five out of six matches this season in which Klein has been one of the two match referees and Bellamy has previously complained to the league about his disappointment in how Klein referees his team.

Storm forward Tim Glasby looks likely to escape suspension after his careless tackle charge from Saturday night was rated as a grade one, 75-point penalty.

The NRL judiciary has offered Glasby a 56-point penalty if he takes an early plea which would mean he only receives a reprimand and carry over points if charged in future.

Storm host Cronulla at AAMI Park on Saturday at 5.30pm in their second last home game.

They are stuck in a logjam to make the top-eight.

  • A lopsided penalty count can indicate one side under the pump, biased or incompetent refereeing or one side repeatedly breaking the rules.

The Storm repeatedly break the rules in their ruck play and deserve every penalty against them, whether that's playing Newcastle or any team.

The NRL should crack down on spoiling in the ruck not bow to the whingeing of Smith and Bellamy.

    • It's the penalties that are not given as well. Waddell was ridiculously offside at marker when he stripped the ball from Slater... that is just really poor refereeing. The penalty for driving the player into touch was incompetent to to a point that is unforgiveable.Been watching the game all of my life and there have always been errors... don't think there has ever been a time when the referees are determining a result to the level of this year.It is CLEARLY because they watch one team closer than another... for whatever reason that is called BIAS.

    • Maybe you should take off your bias glasses and check the try Anthony Mitchell scored after being miles offside. Or Storm players taking the winger out on touch and getting penalised for it. Or Newcastle putting late shots on Cronk and getting away with it. There is a reason why Bellamy is a coach and you are not!

    • Storm boys...learn the rules before you whinge. The ref calls held once the momentum in the tackle is gone.

If after the ref has called "HELD" you then with the benefit of 5 blokes pick up the attacker and carry him over the the sideline you're not making a great you're breaking the rules. And what would the game be like if we didn't have that rule? Every tackle would be 5 blokes carrying the ball runner over the sideline because the call of "HELD" doesn't mean anything. Ridiculous.

What's dumb is after the call of "HELD, HELD, HELD" carrying a bloke deliberately over the sideline.

What's really, really dumb is having been penalised for it once doing it again.

As for the "late" hit on Cronk (dubious) what about the blatant high shot on Sione and possible broken jaw?

PS. Doesn't "Anthony Mitchell" play for the Cowboys. I have no idea what you're talking about.

    • Wow, Ricky Stuart says that there were some amazing decisions in a match and he gets fined $10k immediately and without question.
Craig Bellamy says that a particular ref has it out for the Storm and always shafts them and doesn't get sanctioned. Maybe Dave Smith and Todd Greenberg can explain how that's not questioning the referee's integrity or professionalism
It's funny that the article references Bellamy's earlier half fine. That fine was actually levied against Bellamy because he refused to front a post-match conference rather than for criticising a ref.
