Parramatta Eels announce bumper sponsorship

THEY are still without a head coach, but a year to forget for Parramatta has finally hit a bright spot with new sponsorship deals worth more than $1 million announced by the Eels on Wednesday.

Property developer Dyldam will replace long-time backer Pirtek as the club's major sponsor for the next three seasons, while online betting group Unibet have signed on as well as a back-of-jersey sponsor.

It is understood the two deals are valued at more than $1 million a year.

"These two deals collectively are the biggest sponsorship in the club's history," Parramatta chief executive Scott Seward said. "The jersey now and the brand on it is worth more than it's ever been."

That is despite the Eels claiming two wooden spoons in a row and being rocked by another seasons of instability and disharmony from the board room to the dressing room. They remain on the hunt for a head coach to replace Ricky Stuart, who quit last month with two years remaining on his contract to take up an offer with Canberra.

Dyldam were previously a jersey sleeve sponsor but have upgraded to replace Pirtek on the front of the Eels' jumper.

"To me it shows a bit of faith in our administration and our board that an existing partner has confidence in us to upgrade, but also an international company has the confidence in us to come on board in their first ever sponsorship in Australia," Seward said. "I think there is two ticks for us as a club there."

Parramatta are still to appoint a new coach, and have also interviewed candidates for a football director position.

"It's very important that we get the right person, from a rugby league perspective and a cultural perspective as well. We make no apologies for taking a bit longer to ensure that we do get the right person in that role," Seward said.

  • I hope that no betting advertisements occur at the games next year with so many young fans already being influenced by this industry! I'd personally like the NRL and media to keep a keen eye on this hot topic to ensure the Waterhouse issue does not rear its ugly head in a different way. Apart from that well done Parramatta for the sponsors.

    • Well done boys that's fantastic news in an otherwise bleak year. Can u imagine when we actually start winning games. It's no coincidence that crowds are down when parramatta is not doing well. The crowd at the double header in the first week of the semis was and absolute disgrace and the 3 Sydney clubs involved should hang there heads in shame. Who can forget the magnificent 75000 who filled ANZ in 2009. It think we should have a new saying in RL - " when parramatta is doing well rugby league is doing well"

        • Aarrgghh,

NRL jerseys and sponsorship - the most visually unappealing part of RL. I cannot believe how many ads they cram on those ugly things these days. No wonder the kids are mainly seen in NFL or NBA or NHL jerseys, especially considering NRL jerseys seem to change every year or 2. I mean my poor old Raiders have some diabolical big red flower on the front :^/

          • jg Parramatta changes jumpers every year and during the year they have 1. home game 2. away game, 3. women of league 4.fans day 5. historic round jumpers, did I miss any? I'm a Parra fan season ticket holder and refuse to buy a jumper as not only will it be outdated next year it may out dated the folloiwng week! AFL, sad to say, is ahead of us in this area. My 80's Carlton jumper still looks like the Carltons jumpers now as do MOST, not all, of the other teams.

        • Given that Parra keep winning the Wooden Spoon, you'd think that Home Timber and Hardware would be a much better fit as a major sponsor

          • I remember they ran a garbage article about the NRL losing Pirtek to soccer (even though the soccer deal is next to nothing) and the demises of rugby league blah, blah, blah. It's time the papers started showing rugby league the respect it deserves. It is huge part of our city's culture and isn't going anywhere. In fact, in many ways it is stronger than it has ever been.
