The NRL fined Furner for comments he made following Canberra's 18-12 loss to Manly at Brookvale Oval two weeks ago, when Furner claimed his side had been unfairly disadvantaged by an 8-3 penalty count.
''What I look at is the overall penalty count - 8-3 - now we're not nearly a three times worse side in discipline than Manly,'' Furner said after the game. ''I don't think anybody expected us to come here and win … maybe not them [referees].''
The Raiders appealed the fine and Raiders chief executive Don Furner confirmed last night the NRL had halved the penalty to $5000. He would not comment further, except to say the club accepted the penalty.
The Canberra Times understands the NRL had still found Furner guilty of breaching the league's code of conduct, but lowered the penalty after the club apologised for the comments in its submission.
In other news, the Raiders remain confident of fending off the Wests Tigers and re-signing young forward Sam Mataora. The Tigers have already won one signing battle with the Raiders, however, hanging on to exciting under-20s winger David Nofoaluma despite an approach from Canberra.
