Campese revealed the controversial plan to kick the ball over the dead-ball line, trying to limit the broken-play running of Inglis and NSW Origin winger Nathan Merritt.

The same tactic was criticised as negative in 2009 when the Gold Coast Titans repeatedly kicked over the dead-ball line to keep Melbourne fullback Billy Slater out of the game.

But Campese made no apologies for the plan, especially if the game is played in wet conditions. ''It's forecast for a wet day so in the

wet games it does come down to a kicking game,'' Campese said.

''We'll be kicking early and trying to kick it away from Greg Inglis, trying to hit the sidelines or even kick it dead to stop him running the ball out at a staggered line.

''Kicking it dead or into touch will slow the game down and keep the ball in their territory, you don't want to play football in your own end in the wet weather because you get fatigued and heavy in the legs.''

Inglis has been the Raiders' tormentor since breaking into the NRL. He has scored 16 tries in 13 games against the Green Machine, making 80 tackle breaks and setting up eight more tries.

Merritt has scored 11 tries in 13 games this year.

Raiders coach David Furner said Campese has one of the best long-kicking games in the NRL and backed the tactic ''at the right time of the game''

''Inglis, his position at fullback has been tremendous and he's been the form fullback of the competition. We've got to limit the time and the metres he can make,'' Furner said.

The Raiders are expected to be bolstered by the return of Queensland forward Josh Papalii to take on the ladder-leading Rabbitohs.

Papalii made his Origin debut on Wednesday night and joined the team in Sydney for its final training session on Thursday.

The Rabbitohs have four players backing up just two days after Origin - Inglis, Merritt, Chris McQueen and Ben Te'o.

It could take a toll towards the end of the match, but Campese said Inglis, McQueen and Te'o would still be riding on a high after Queensland's victory.

The Rabbitohs ended the Raiders' premiership dreams last season when they trounced the Green Machine 38-16 in a semi-final at ANZ Stadium.

The Raiders haven't beaten South Sydney since 2009 and making the task tougher is Canberra's woeful away record. It has won just one game away from Canberra Stadium this season.

''The boys are still hurting from last year's semi-final loss to Souths,'' Campese said.

''So we want to try to get one back on them and there's no better opportunity to do that than at their home ground on a Friday night when they're on top of the competition.''
