Referees Ben Cummins and Matt Cecchin were on the way to being given control of State of Origin I after their efforts in the Anzac Day blockbuster between St George Illawarra and Sydney Roosters.
''That didn't guarantee them of the Origin game, but the way they handled the Anzac Day match certainly got them a big tick from Billy (Harrigan) and myself,'' said joint referees' boss Stuart Raper last night. ''It put them on the road, and after considering the recent form of all the leading referees we went with them.''
Cummins and Cecchin were yesterday named for the game between NSW and Queensland at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday. It looks, on paper, an inexperienced duo at Origin level, with Cummins having done one Origin and Cecchin none, but Raper was adamant they were up to it.
''Matt may not have done an Origin yet, but he was one of last year's grand final referees and he also did the Four Nations final at Leeds,'' Raper said. ''I was at the Four Nations, and the pressure he had to cope with that day, with 30,000 Poms screaming for their team, will be a good preparation for Origin.''
