Raiders upset sorry Souths

After leading by 22-points at halftime, Canberra dominates a flat Rabbitohs side 30-18 at ANZ Stadium on Sunday.

Sam Burgess says the feeling at South Sydney has not changed from last year despite the Rabbitohs falling to their third consecutive defeat in a lacklustre and error-riddled performance against Canberra at ANZ Stadium on Sunday.

After opening the season with an impressive 28-8 win over premiers Sydney Roosters, Souths have been beaten by Manly, Wests Tigers and Canberra - the first time they have lost three successive matches since the arrival of coach Michael Maguire at the start of the 2012 season.

With Burgess having been granted a release to play rugby union for Bath at the end of this season, there has been speculation of unrest within the Rabbitohs' camp and Tigers prop Aaron Woods confirmed after last week's 25-12 win over Souths that the England forward had become a target for opposition teams.

But Burgess said there were no divisions at the Rabbitohs and says if he and his teammates can cut down on errors they will quickly turn their season around.

"There is always talk and speculation, but to be honest I don't even know what is being said about us," Burgess said. "To be honest, I'm not really that fussed about what is written because, as a group, we are that tight and we understand that happens in sport.

"As a group we don't look into that and certainly as a group there is no problem within the team. I am sure there might be a few more things written now we have lost three in a row, but I can come out and clearly say the group is as tight as it's been and we are going to work really hard to turn it around as quick as possible."

Asked about the comments by Woods after Burgess had taken exception to a tackle on his brother George, Burgess rejected suggestions that had played a role in Wests' win over the Rabbitohs.

"It is a very competitive game and there is always going to be battles between forwards. I expect it and I am sure they expect it, too," he said.

"But if that is how he feels that is fair enough, he has got his own opinion on the game. That didn't make us drop the ball. That happened after 10 minutes, there was still 70 minutes left in the game."

Dropped balls again hurt the Rabbitohs in the six-tries-to-three loss to Canberra, as Souths completed just 10 of their 19 sets of tackles in the first half.

In contrast, the Raiders managed to get to the last tackle on all but four of their 38 sets.

"The last couple of weeks have been pretty stinky," Burgess said. "It is just a bit of concentration at times, I think, and individually respecting the ball. We had three or four errors in the first half that were just through them contacting the ball and it came free. We have got no one to blame but ourselves.

"I don't know what it is but we are certainly working hard on fixing things. It isn't transferring for us on the field.

"We are certainly disappointed with results but, worried, no. It is a long season but having said that it goes pretty fast so you have got to fix it pretty quick."

Burgess said the new rules introduced this season had changed the game, but he refused to use that as an excuse for the Rabbitohs' poor form.

"The competition is extremely tight and the new rules have sped the game up," he said. "We want to win every game, as everyone else does. As you have seen with the results, no one is four from four, no one has really set it on fire this year. I didn't expect to be in this position but I am sure as a group we can come out and fix it."

  • Souths got belted by a better team although given Mr Walter's column you would have wonder whether Canberra was involved in yesterday's game

    • Well Sam I watched the first half and didn't see you or your brother make a decent run. Nothing resembling the Roosters or Manly games.......so maybe a week with North Sudney might be just the thing you need.
