Steve Menzies will come out of retirement to play his first game for the Sea Eagles in almost six years at this weekend's Auckland Nines.

The 40-year-old, who at the end of last year retired from the game after 21 years in the top grade in the NRL and English Super League, will on Tuesday be named in Manly's squad for the Nines tournament at Eden Park.

Fairfax Media also understands Manly have privately been discussing the possibility of Menzies returning for the NRL season on a one-year deal, however the chances of that happening are very slim.

It is understood Menzies has considered the possibility of making a return to the NRL but that could hinge on how he performs in Auckland.

He has a close relationship with former teammate and now Sea Eagles coach Geoff Toovey, but salary cap restraints may also prohibit Manly from signing Menzies on a one-year deal.

While the Sea Eagles are depleted in the forwards following the departures of George Rose and Brent Kite and the retirements of Joe Galuvao and Richie Fa'aoso, they are well served in the back-row.

Menzies, who began his career at Manly in 1993, has spent the past five years playing in the English Super League for the Bradford Bulls and Catalans Dragons.

He'll join former representative teammate Brad Fittler to come out of retirement for the inaugural Nines tournament.

  • This whole thing is becoming the laughing stock of professional sport by the day. What next? Will they they get them all to wear Buggie Smugglers instead of footy shorts as well?

    • @RTP

Unfortunately, I feel this is mainly the result of so many of their current players coming over to play Rugby.... it's a bit sad really. Further, It's rather vacuous and here's the result.... old blokes going 'round again and again.
Geez.... I hope these old League players that they're pulling out of retirement to make the 9's work don't suffer any serious injury..... or embarassment. Or both !

    • Hang on, let me get this right.

This event, which is a 'lauging stock', raises 'NO interest', is 'vacuous', and a 'Mickey Mouse show', has sold over 90 000 tickets despite being staged in Rugby Union heartland.

Gee, my beloved sport must be in far better shape that even I'd hoped for.

And as for the Beaver, I saw him play last year. He looked fit and strong. It will be a pleasure watching this legend running around again.

  • Yes!! Menzies has been playing at the top level up until a few months ago. Why not come back for the Mickey Mouse show?

Hope he doesn't come back full time though. Sure he could, but he had THE perfect send off back in 2008.

    • Matt G you are not trying to tell us that England League is top level are you? The England Super League runs at about NSW Cup level and that is definitely not top class it's full of retired NRL players.

  • Looks like the rugby folk are back online again - four months ago on this website they were out in force bagging the RL World Cup, now it's the Nines. The only reason people turned up to the rugby in Sydney the other night was to see ex-League stars. Steve Menzies was playing at top level just six months ago, so why shouldn't he play? He's a freak of nature and a credit to the game of rugby league. I can't wait.

    • Julie you really have no clue on how it works do you? Benji and Izzy like so, so many players before them were union boys, they were freaks in their age groups until they were 16-17 years old when the waving of league dollars took them out. The RLWC was a farce, the only close game was the decider to see who would get smashed by the kangaroos. Also, though I love beaver, I want my last memory of him to be when he won the 08 flag, not some farcical display that attempts to compete with the sevens tournament.

    • Phil, I just did some research on Israel F and Benji They were always league as a juniors, in fact they both represented Australia as schoolboys (even though BM is a kiwi). And if Benji was a union prodigy as a kid, why is he having such a hard time learning the game now? You union folks have no shame. Just give it away.

And hear hear to Joe the Expat!
