NRL star Todd Carney is assisting police after a friend was charged for allegedly assaulting two teenagers while he was with the Sharks player in Cronulla on Sunday night.
Police say an altercation involving a number of men occurred outside a fast food restaurant on The Kingsway, at the northern end of the shopping mall at about 7.40pm on Sunday.
It’s been reported one of the teenagers yelled “Go Sharkies” at Carney’s group before the 28-year-old accused allegedly took offence and approached them.
"One person in the victim’s group yelled some certain words of encouragement to the Sharkies, being Carney’s club,” said Inspector Mark Walker from Cronulla police station.
"The suspect, who was in the group with Carney, then approached these two males and he’s assaulted them both by punching them in the head causing injuries to one of them."
Following the incident, an 18-year-old from Grays Point and a 19-year-old from Kirrawee reported the matter at Cronulla Police Station and requested medical treatment for facial injuries, police said.
One teenager lost a tooth and had swollen lips, and the other had swelling to his cheek and eye area, Inspector Walker said.
The 28-year-old Cronulla man was later arrested by police in a nearby hotel.
Inspector Walker was unable to confirm the relationship between the man and Carney, but said the NRL star was not involved in the assault.
He said Carney was assisting police with the matter, and that officers hoped to speak to the footballer again on Monday and take a formal statement.
Carney could not be reached by Fairfax Media for comment.
On Carney’s Twitter account, the Cronulla playmaker wrote at about 1am:
Hello fans and friends just spoke with the cops I was not involved in no fight tonight. More details to come tomorrow— Todd Carney (@tcarney06) March 23, 2014
When one user asked why he had spoken to police, Carney replied:

The 28-year-old male arrested was charged with two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and granted conditional bail to attend Sutherland Local Court on April 24.
