Bizarre is the best way to sum up what the 9210 fans who braved chilly conditions on Mother's Day witnessed at Canberra Stadium yesterday.
The frustrating and unpredictable nature of both the Raiders and Eels must be driving their respective coaches crazy.
Take Josh Dugan's shimmy up the middle of the park to set up Reece Robinson's try in the second half.
The Raiders fullback waltzed past some defence - described by Fox Sports pundit Laurie Daley as ''soft'' - before firing a bullet-like cut-out ball to Robinson to stretch the lead out to 18 points with 12 minutes remaining.
For all intents and purposes the Eels were done. Remember, this is a side which has won just once in nine games this year and now needed to score three quick converted tries.
All the Raiders had to do was hold on to the ball, control territory and cruise to their fourth win of the year.
Yet the Eels wouldn't lie down. Ryan Morgan crossed in the left-hand corner, Jarryd Hayne made the most of a fortunate bounce from a Chris Sandow chip kick to put the maligned halfback under the posts and Ken Sio exposed the Raiders' bogey area - their left-edge defence.
Only Luke Burt's missed conversion of the Morgan try left the Eels behind with three minutes to go.
Nervous home-town fans desperate to see their side break a three-game losing streak could only rest easy when 19-year-old centre Jack Wighton fended past two weak Eels tackles to race 50m as the clock wound down.
''It was great to get a try but it's always a good feeling to get the two points,'' Wighton said.
''There's a lot of work to do in our game and fix up. There's always room for improvement.''
Defence is the main concern. The Raiders have leaked an average of 31.5 points a game in their past four matches and struggled to maintain their intensity for the entire 80 minutes.
Still, with a 4-6 win-loss record, a top-eight finish isn't out of the question. With Dugan firing, and providing they can rectify those stretches in games where they switch off, the Raiders could yet be a force to be reckoned with.
