There was some dispute about the strip call that led to Reynolds' penalty goal that proved decisive. I'll leave that to greater footballing minds to debate but there would have to be at least one controversial call or it wouldn't be rugby league.

I dunno about you but I was flat keeping up with that frenetic game in the end.

Sam Burgess redeemed himself with that great field-goal smother at the death so I take it all back big fella. No really. But I still reckon George had a stormer of a game but it will be remembered for GI's wonder try in the first half.

That seems like a long time ago. Thanks for joining our live coverage of tonight's game. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Enjoy the rest of your long weekend. Good night!

80 min: The Broncos have it but a field goal won't do it.

They spin it wide to Vidot but he is swamped into touch and Souths celebrate.

Tic-tic--The siren goes and the fans are booing.

    What a game.

    Souths by two!

    Souths 28-26

79 min: The short kick off goes into touch and the Broncs pack down quickly.

    Souths 28-26

It's over!! What was my tip again?

    Souths 28-26

77 min: Hunt lines it up but Sam Burgess of all people charges it down and is away. He has the ball knocked out in the tackle and Souths get a quick tap. Goodwin takes off and has the balls tripped again so now Reynolds get a penalty kick 35m out just to the left. OMG.

    26-26

75 min: Maranta kicks twice in one tackle and finds Reed wide who bats it on but Walker pounces on it just on his line.

George Burgess is hit in a big one by Glenn and loses it. The Broncos get it back and could be field goal time.

    26-26

74 min: We're in for a cracking last few minutes now. Souths have had their chances but have been their own worst enemies. Can they pull it together? the game is there for the taking if they can as the Broncos look a little tired.

    26-26

Big kick for Reynolds but not too hard, and he slots it!

    26-26

72 min: Koroisau throws a wild pass that's scooped up by the Broncos who burst out of their quarter only for McQueen to strip it back and go on a bullocking run back at the Broncos line.

TRY! Or is it? Sutton throws a cutout to Inglis who finds Avau'a in a hole to cross over. But they're checking for obstruction on the decoy runner between Sutton and Inglis.

    It's good!

    Brisbane 26-24

70 min: Having said that, George Burgess pounces on a loose ball and Souths get a crack at the Broncos.

Reynolds chips in between the posts but Maranta comes across and fists it dead in the nick of time. That was so close.

    Brisbane 26-20

    Hunt adds the extras.

Sam Burgess is running third best of the Burgii out there tonight so far. He has made some silly errors, and that last one was the worst and cost his side six points and all the momentum.

    Brisbane 26-20

67 min: McInnes has gone off for a concussion test. The Broncs get a penalty for silly strip by Sam Burgess. They go wide to Hodges in a more familiar positon, but he's wrapped up by in-your-face defence.

TRY! Hunt puts grubber through in behind in slomo and the excellent Reed dives on it.

It's good! Of course it was.

    Brisbane 26-20

64 min: McInnes gets a pass on his laces as Souths throw it around in disjointed attack. He juggles it backwards but eventually Parker dives on the loose ball and the Broncos get a big let-off. Souths don't get a kick away but neither do the broncos in their set but Sutton does them favour by knocking on.

Some tired minds and bodies out there as mistakes creep in on both sides. Who will profit?

    Brisbane 22-20

62 min: Sutton tries a cutout to Gi but it's read. Johnston gets the ball out wide and shows great pace off the mark to evade one but is wrapped up.

Reynolds puts a great bouncing grubber through near the posts and Barba is wrapped up in goal for another drop-out as Souths looks to turn the screws.

    Brisbane 22-20

60 min: Hunt puts in a strange mongrel kick to no one as they are unable to break out of the half and Souths come again.

Sutton and Reynolds probe for holes up the middle of the tiring Broncos pack.

Sutton puts a grubber in but the Broncs mop up and Souths get the dropout back. More pressure on the hosts.

    Brisbane 22-20

58 min: McCullough chips to himself and looks to have been tripped or did he dive? Did he play for it, leaving his leg in, soccer style? Hmm. Nothing given so it's moot. Te'o limps off for Souths.

    Brisbane 22-20

57 min: You can't take your eyes off this game for a second, just ask the Broncos.

Reynolds kicks to Barba on the last as they look to pin the Broncos in their half again and force a mistake but the Broncs hold tight as they work it up the middle.

    Brisbane 22-20

55 min: Gi gets another run from kick by the Broncs. Even jogging he looks dangerous.

Reynolds bursts through a hole but can't beat Barba in the battle of the big men.

Sam Burgess tries a kick as the ball spills from a loose pass in broken play deep in Brisbane territory.

Johnston somehow almost manages to keep it in fling it in goal but it bounces away from Walker.

    Brisbane 22-20

54 min: Big George wants to take them on all by himself. Souths kick on the last and Barba is wrapped up 5m out. He hasn't been able to do much so far this game.

    Brisbane 22-20

Reynolds adds the extras with no trouble and we have a two-point ballgame. That try came out of nothing.

    Brisbane 22-20

49 min: Brisbane get six more tackles. Nothing is going right for the Rabbits now. Sam Burgess almost takes Glenn's head off but is lucky to miss.

They go wide to the corner and lose the ball. Goodwin breaks free into open space but is collared.

The Broncos are pinged and Reynodls takes quick tap running into the marker, trying to win another one. They eventually get it for a strip as they try to catch the Broncos on the back foot.

TRY! George Burgess bashes his way over from nothing.

    Brisbane 22-18

46 min: Now Hodges loses it in a tackle and Souths get it back. A little let-off there. Now can they make them pay? Burgess offloads to Avau'a who looks dangerous.

Reynolds bombs on the last but Barba takes it safely and goes on a run. Souths are pinged again for third man coming in late in the next tackle. A cannonball?

    Brisbane 22-14

45 min: The Broncos have put on 22 points straight now. Can the Rabbits regroup?

Hunt kicks low on the last straight to GI and he fields this one OK. Maybe they sense he's vulnerable around his bootlaces being so tall. Interesting.

Turner loses it backwards spinning in the tackle and Gillett pounces on it. They're first to everything at the moment, the Broncos.

    Brisbane 16-14

The Rabbits are still in the sheds evidently to fall for that one.

Hunt adds the extras from beside the posts.

    Brisbane 22-14

42 min: The Broncos bomb on the last and contest the high ball, coming up with and get an extra set.

TRY! McCullough throws a dummy from a metre out and burrows over. Too easy!

    Brisbane 20-14

41 min: Souths kick on the last and Barba fumbles it backwards but gets away with it but is pinned deep in his own half.

Sam Burgess goes off for a blood bin with a nasty gash. The stripe on forehead matches the red stripes on his jersey. Brisbane 16-14

40 min: Broncos kick off and Souths hit it up through the forwards as they try to break out of their half. Brisbane 16-14

... can. Greg Inglis scored one of the tries of the season for Souths before the Broncos turned the game on its head.

    If you ...

If you ... Photo: Bradley Kanaris

Have you got your breath back yet? What a half of two halves that was.

Greg Inglis' incredible solo try, beating seven men as he ran 70m to casually dot down one-handed after almost being stopped a metre out will be replayed for years to come.

It is being rated among the greatest of all time, and who am I to argue. But he won't want it to be the highlight of a losing game after the last 20 minutes of that half was all Broncos with Hunt and rookie five-eight Justin Hodges leading the charge.

Is the undoubtedly talented but injury-prone centre auditioning for a new role? If he is, he's doing all right.

Not too long now until the second half. The Rabbits will come out with a flea in their ear no doubt after squandering such a great start. Bring it on.

    Brisbane 16-14

    Catch me ...

Catch me ... Photo: Matt Roberts

40 min: The Broncs go blind and Hunt almost gets coathangered but no pen. They're on the march. Hunt chips infield and Inglis juggles .. but holds on and takes the tackle much to the relief of his teammates.

Reynolds chips wide for Johnston but Barba ends up with it and is bustled into touch. The Rabbits are in a hurry to pack down but the siren goes and there's a little argy-bargy between the packs as they disengage.

    What half of football.

    Brisbane 16-14

38 min: The Broncs are fired up in defence, swarming over the Souths runners, forcing them to kick from inside their own half. Brisbane 16-14

36 min: Hunt finds touch for the Broncos as he gets hammered kicking on the last. Smart move as GI will be looking to atone for letting the Broncos back in the game, a chance they've grabbed with both hands.

    Brisbane 16-14

He had three blokes holding him up but gravity and Gillett's weight and determination did the rest.

Hunt pots the kick from beside the posts to put Brisbane in front. How on earth did that happen?

    Brisbane 16-14

TRY! Gillett looks held up over the line but wriggles free.

It's gone upstairs ... In play that would have been held but ... looks good.

    It's good!

    14-14

34 min: They bust up the middle and Hannant gets a miracle offload away as he cuddles the upright but it's put down and the knock-on is given to Inglis trying to pounce on the loose bvall. Crazy game at the moment. Souths 14-10

32 min: Ill discpline and errors hurt Souths in those couple of crazy minutes. Reed makes a half break out wide as the Broncos throw it around.

Hunt bombs and it's batted back by Gillett to Copley who throws on the boot and Souths are trapped in goal. The Broncos get it back from the drop-out. Great attackign play and pressure to back it up.

    Souths 14-10

What a turnaround by the Broncos as they looked to be on the canvas.

Parker kicks it from the sideline! Cracking kick. There's a try in it.

    Souths 14-10

TRY! Hodges puts the flying Maranta over in the corner

They've gone upstairs ... does he lose contact in the air while grounding? There's a fingernail in it.

    It's good! Game on!

    Souths 14-8

28 min: That was very much against the run of play but Hodges looks in ominous form, assuming the playmaking role tonight. He runs it out and wins a penalty so the Broncos get six more and look rejuvenated by that try.

Hunt throws a dummy and almost breaks through then Parker has a burst and they win a penalty in striking range.

    Souths 14-4

Well after one of the greatest tries you'll see, GI shows he's mortal with a schoolboy error on his own line under not much pressure. It was more a roller than a grubber but snatched at it.

The conversion was unsuccessful from the sideline.

    Souths 14-4

26 min: Hodges tries to do a GI from dummy-half and breaks a couple of tackles but is wrapped up.

Copley puts a grubber in and GI fumbles and McCullough pounces on the loose ball.

TRY!? Broncos ... gone upstairs but looks OK.

    And it's good!

    Souths 14-4

24 min: Here they come again. Reynolds grubbers in behind the line and an awkward bounce evades the Broncos. Te'o knocks on and Barba knocks back before it's grounded by Avua'a.

They're checking for offside but it's been knocked on.

No try as expected and it didn't seem like it at first glance but you never know these days.

The Broncos get it back deep in their own half with backs to the wall of green and red.

    Souths 14-0

24 min: Gillett puts a bell ringer on Luke Burgess but the Broncos give away a penalty next tackle for offside. Not happening for the hosts at the moment and the big crowd is very subdued.

    Souths 14-0

22 min: That was a big let-off for the Broncos who are like rabbits in the headlights at the moment. Hodges goes for a run from dummy-half and makes some easy metres. He looks dangerous with the ball in hand.

The Broncos kick dead on the last after a more promising set.

    Souths 14-0

19 min: George Burgess bumps Parker off about 5m backwards and gets an offload to Sutton. They bomb on the last but back off as they're offside and Barba gets a free crack at it. Then Copley loses it in the next tackle and the Rabbits get a scrum feed in Brisbane's half.

Here they come again with the Burgesses keen to have a crack at the Brisbane line.

Sam goes close then Luke spills a bullet pass with the line begging. Unlucky.

    Souths 14-0

17 min: Reynolds kicks on the last to Barba. Will he chip? Not likely. He offloads to Vidot and he takes the tackle. That was about the only time the Broncos had been in the Souths half when Barba chipped.

Hunt kicks on the last straight to Goodwin this time and Souths get it back.

    Souths 14-0

I repeat: Amazing. GI is quite a sight in full flight.

Reynolds misses again from out wide, the other side this time. But they're going almost a point a minute.

    Souths 14-0

14 min: Barba chips to himself but finds GI and off he goes ...

TRY! Amazing. He seemed to be in slow motion there swatting Broncos like flies as he waltzed 70m to dot down one-handed in the corner after almost being tackled. Almost.

What a roar. Is this an away game?

    Souths 14-0

George Burgess had almost barged over the a tackle before, compressing the Broncos defence and then the crossfield chip by Reynolds was inch perfect for the flying winger who had all the time in the world it seemed.

Reynolds misses the kick from the sideline.

If you want to read more about Alex Johnston, here's Michael Carayannis's story

    Souths 10-0

They've gone upstairs but looks OK. He half spilled it in the air but came down on it and put pressure. A try on debut for the winger ...

    And it's good. Souths 10-0

10 min: TRY! Another one to Souths. Reynolds chips to Johnston in the corner. Too easy. Souths 10-0

9 min: And now Maranta knocks on, taking his eyes off a pass right on his own line. A real coach killer that one. Souths get the feed in striking range. Souths 6-0

Great stepping by the young Fijian hooker to get through a crowd of Broncos, who were reduced to spectators but all the hard work was done by Inglis who looks in a mood tonight.

Reynolds pots the conversion. Souths 6-0

8 min: TRY! Souths. Inglis is put through a half gap and breaks a couple of tackles to find Koroisau who dives in beside the posts, carrying a couple of Broncos with him. Great effort.

It went upstairs for no reason and is duly given.

    Souths 4-0

6 min: The Rabbits kick on the 5th and Vidot gets a run this time. Neither team making much inroads into the defensive lines yet. The Broncos try a variation on the 5th with Vidot kicking infield only to find Inglis but he's wrapped up before he can hit the after burners or the don't argues. 0-0

4 min: The Broncos throw it wide, finding Maranta but he can only run back into traffic. Barba chips on the last but it skews back into touch. The Broncs have joined the party after a safety-first start.  0-0

3 min: The Rabbits are more cavalier, spilling it twice in that set with stray passes, but get an extra set then spill it again through Te'o and the Broncs are keen to let him know all about it. 0-0

2 min: Inglis gets his first touch as the Broncs kick on the 5th from dummy-half under pressure. They hit it up all the first set, safety first, with Parker getting involved. 0-0

1 min: Souths kick off deep and McGuire takes the first hit-up. Game on.

    Kick-off to come.

There has been a lot said and written about the merits or otherwise of playing matches on Anzac Day. I'm in favour because even if it focuses the minds of 40,000+ present in the crowd and countless more watching at home on the true meaning of this great day for one solemn minute, it is worth it.

They're playing The Last Post now.

Good evening and welcome to our live coverage of Brisbane v South Sydney from the Cauldron in BrisVegas.

Shane Brady here with you for the next couple of hours as the Broncos hosts the Rabbitohs with both sides looking to improve on middling starts at best to the season.

A big crowd of 40-50,000 is expected on a balmy night perfect for football.

I was going to say thank God it's Thaiday but big Sam is out for the Broncos as is playmaker Josh Hoffman, two key losses for the hosts, while Souths are close to full strength.

Will the big crowd be enough to get the Broncs over the line in what should be a tight encounter? Expect there to be more than smattering of myrtle and cardinal in the stands at Suncorp.

All eyes will be on the fullbacks Greg Inglis and Ben Barba in what shapes as mouth-watering match-up. Will the Queenslander from the remote outpost of Kempsey cut loose or will Ben Barba continue on his upward trajectory in his bid to return to the form that made him a Dally M medallist? Or a bit of both? Let's hope so.

Head on the block time: I'm tipping Souths by two

Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane, Friday 8pm (AEST)
Last meeting: Round 8 2013 - Souths 26 bt Broncos 12 at Suncorp Stadium
    Head-to-head:  Broncos 21 Souths 6 Drawn 1
    Referees:
    Gavin Badger, Grant Atkins
    TV:
    Live, Channel 9
    Ladbrokes:
    Broncos $2.05, Rabbitohs $1.77
    Betfair:
    Broncos $2.08, Rabbitohs $1.78

Michael Chammas writes: The Bunnies will still be stinging from last Friday's heart-breaking one-point loss to the Bulldogs. They have a few injury concerns and come up against a Broncos team high on confidence given the comfortable 32-6 win against Newcastle last week. This is a tough one to pick but the Rabbitohs should be able to bounce back and collect the two points.

    Tip: Rabbitohs by 6

AAP writes: Inconsistent Brisbane can really make a statement about their premiership intentions in this game against NRL heavyweights Souths. Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire dropped a selection bombshell in axing club favourite Nathan Merritt for Alex Johnson in a sign pasts effort mean nothing. Sam Thaiday (calf) remains sidelined for Brisbane, while the Rabbitohs welcome back George Burgess and Ben Te’o from suspension. There is sure to be a finals-type atmosphere at Suncorp Stadium for what could be a finals preview.

Key: Ben Barba. Which version of the enigmatic superstar will take the Suncorp Stadium turf?

BRONCOS: Ben Barba, Daniel Vidot, Jack Reed, Justin Hodges (capt), Dale Copley, Josh Hoffman, Ben Hunt, Josh McGuire, Andrew McCullough, Martin Kennedy, Alex Glenn, Corey Parker (capt), Matt Gillett. Interchange: Ben Hannant, Corey Oates, Jarrod Wallace, Jake Granville, Todd Lowrie (one to be omitted).

RABBITOHS: Greg Inglis, Nathan Merritt, Dylan Walker, Kirisome Auva’a, Bryson Goodwin, John Sutton (capt), Adam Reynolds, George Burgess, Apisai Koroisau, Dave Tyrrell, Kyle Turner, Ben Te’o, Sam Burgess. Interchange: Cameron McInnes, Jason Clark, Chris McQueen, Luke Burgess, Joel Reddy, Ben Lowe, Joe Picker (three to be omitted).

    • You blokes are kidding right? That was a penalty every day of the week. The ball runner was held by one player whilst another player came over and knocked the ball out of his hands. On the GI try, it's a shame the Bunnies weren't playing Easts because I'm sure that the human tackling machine Little Mitchell would have nailed Inglis.... NOT!

    • I have no doubt the strip was the correct call. Sam was already in a tackle and Hunt came charging in and went straight for the ball. That's a strip any day of the week.

As for the 10m against Parker, none of the camera angles showed exactly where he was when the tap was taken, but the second Goodwin took the tap you could see the ref look immediately upfield to check the onside and he had no hesitation calling the penalty.

    • It is obvious the refs are showing an extreme lack of confidence and in some ways you cant blame them. The game is being taken out of their hands. They dont decide trys anymore the guy upstairs does.

Its a scary scenario when the ref cannot make the decision on the most fundamental part of the game, the try. This flows on to other parts of the game, they just cant be sure whether they are right or wrong as they don't have the benefit of rewinding time and freezing frames on the spot, they are out on the field.

Its a psychological thing, knowing that your on the spot decisions out of the field are being replayed on TV sets all over the state.

If you were to go back to the 'old ways' you would remove the video referee. You make the call on the field, it stands and you move on. Giving that confidence back to referees would allow them to take control of the game again.

    • Yeah it happens. Happened last week to us, the Cowboys have copped it all year, the Dragons as well. Stop whinging, the refs make mistakes as do the players every week. It was an entertaining, close game, just enjoy it for that. Hodges took a dive in the first half to win a penalty which changed the flow of the game totally. As a fan I struggle much more watching that rubbish than an honest mistake by a ref, and he's always the first there whinging when a 50/50 goes against them, he's Brisbane's version of Jamie Lyon.

    • I see the word dubious used in some of the posts. Get it right, the finak decision was blatantly wrong and it only adds to the weekly errors that change the result of games (Cowboys, Manly). Badger has been involved twice. With his "new age" hair style, is this a message that he feels the diminishing crowds (except in Brisbane) are turning up to see him. Come on NRL, this is getting way beyond embarrassing. The only ones laughing ae the bookies or are they part of the joke as well? Clean up the game or lose it!

    • Yep it was a 50/50 call (not a ref blunder) that decided the game but to be honest I preferred that over the GOLDEN POINT DOG'S BREAKFAST LUCKY DIP...either bring back the draw or make it golden try. All those saying the ref's blundered are overreacting...but if you think you can do better then get out there and show us yer stuff.

      • Yes this one was a 50 / 50 call as the Broncos player only tried to contain the ball not hold the ball into the opposition player by putting his arms around the player so I feel the call was correct. But if anything needs to be dripped in the game is the golden point rule and for that matter get rid of the field goal as the game is not AFL.

        Great game otherwise.

    • Another match decided by a referee blunder in the last two minutes of the game. When is the NRL going to get this right????
The NRL cannot afford to upset Brisbane fans this way, if we stop going to games thru utter disgust at referee actions who'll be the losers in the end.
Retrain the refs and allow them near a footy field until a strip is.
Get this right NRL, once and for all.

      • Yeah, that penalty was a bit dubious, but there were quite a few dubious calls in the game, and both sides benefitted from them at various stages.

It's the timing of that penalty that makes it stand out.

Good call on there being no obstruction, glad to see they've learned from last week's debacles.

Souths were deserved winners, only just, and mainly because it would hurt worse for them to lose after GI scored such a great try.

It makes up for the loss last week that was also tinged by poor refereeing.
