Not sure where to start. Cracking game of footy, some madness from the refs (again) and the better team got home. That's why we love rugby league - so often the madder it is the better it is.

The Broncos stay alive, although they've got a really tough task against the Storm in Melbourne next weekend.

The Dragons were brave, and put together a tremendous comeback - with more than a little help from the refs - but it's season over for them.

All in front of a bumper and boisterous crowd.

A lot of the talk will again be about the match officials, unfortunately.

That's all from here. Stay on smh.com.au and check out Steve Mascord's match report and all the fallout - the press conferences should be entertaining.

    Catch you next time.

Gillett has just told Darren Lockyer on Channel 9 the ref apologised to him when he returned from the bin! What the?

    Full-time.

    Broncos 30 Dragons 22

Hodges cleans up a Widdop kick. That's it for the Dragons.

Dragons on the attack, but the clock will beat them. 1 min to go.

2 mins to go. The Broncos look like they'll stay alive. They've got the Storm in Melbourne in the final round.

Inside the final 5 mins. And the boys are getting restless. Bit of push and shove.

Great defence from the Dragons bundles Vidot into touch just a metre out from the line. The Dragons haven't given up hope.

71st min: And Gillett crashes over for the Broncos. How fitting. He was the man sent to the bin. Hodges popped a nice inside ball. It's sent upstairs to check the grounding, but it's a try alright. Parker converts. That could be the end for the Dragons.

    Broncos 30 Dragons 22

Dragons turn the ball over on halfway. Great opportunity for the Broncos to stem the flow of points.

Dale Copley dragged down a metre short of the Dragons line. End-to-end stuff.

Crowd is 36,720. And they're loving it.

64th min: And the Dragons are in again. It's a wave of red and white at the moment. Marshall grubbers ahead and regathers and then after some good hands from Beale and Thompson, Peter Mata'utia scores wide out. Widdop converts. Cracking finish in the offing.

    Broncos 24 Dragons 22

Gillett is back from the bin and it's 13 on 13 again. No shortage of madness, but a cracking game anyway.

59th min: And now Joel Thompson has put the Dragons right back in it. And the pass is questionable too. They'll tear the grandstands down here in a minute. Anyway, Thompson scores. And this is all happening while the Broncs are a man down. Widdop converts.

    Broncos 24 Dragons 16

There's some drama here. Gillett appears to have been onside from the Marshall break when he was sent to the bin. Then it really looked like a knock on for the try. What would we talk about if it wasn't the refs?

54th min: And the Dragons are back in it, with a controversial try. Marshall kicks wide and Vidot knocks on into Nightingale, who appeared to also knock on. But the video ref has ruled otherwise and it's a try. Widdop converts. There's hope for the Dragons.

    Broncos 24 Dragons 10

Another penalty Dragons. And Benji goes straight up the middle from a quick tap. Shades of Leichhardt. And the refs put Gillett in the bin. Big chance now.

But they throw a forward pass. Or do they? That wasn't even close to being forward. Terrible decision. Not much going the visitors way.

Penalty Dragons for a "crusher" tackle by Sam Thaiday. Another chance for the Dragons.

Ben Creagh is gone for the night with an ankle injury. Long way back for the Dragons with 16 men.

The Brisbane defence holds. No change to the half-time score: Broncos 24 Dragons 4.

Penalty Dragons. Chance to hit back. They've got points in them.

Vidot is limping after being buckled over in a tackle. But he looks like he'll battle on.

And they pull McCullough down inches short. Hanging on - by a thread the Dragons.

The Dragons have dropped it on the opening set. Terrible start. Broncos back on the attack.

We're under way in the second half.

Ben Hunt crosses for his second try.

Ben Hunt crosses for his second try. Photo: Getty Images

Really entertaining half of footy - particularly if you're a Brisbane fan. Ben Hunt has been great, Hodges really good and the rest of the Broncos not far behind.

The Dragons have missed twice as many tackles as the Broncos and if they don't clean that up they're no chance.

Jason Nightingale and the Dragons celebrate.

Jason Nightingale and the Dragons celebrate. Photo: Getty Images

The Broncos go side to side and back again before Lachlan Maranta is finally caught with the ball. They did really well there the Dragons, but they've got a mountain to climb in the second half. That's half-time.

    Broncos 24 Dragons 4

And they hang on - just. Nightingale knocks a kick over the dead-ball line. They'll need to hang on for another set.

Broncos get a penalty from the restart. It could be all over right here for the Dragons. 2 mins to the break. They must hang on.

35th min: But Vidot doesn't have to wait long - he's over in the corner. Great cut-out pass from Hunt (he's having a night) after a strong surge from hooker Ben McCullough. The Dragons' season is hanging by a thread here. Parker converts from touch.

    Broncos 24 Dragons 4

Daniel Vidot makes a long break, but he too loses the ball. Dragons escape again. And now they get a penalty.

The Dragons were on their knees as the Broncs rolled right through them after the kick-off, but Ben Hannant knocked on at a crucial moment and let the Dragons off the hook.

29th min: The Dragons were making the running, but the tide has turned here and the Broncos are in again through Matt Gillett. He runs onto a nice ball from Hodges, who is reveling in getting his hands on the ball more. Parker converts again.

    Broncos 18 Dragons 4

23rd min: And Hunt goes over for his second try of the night. And again it's with the dummy, after some great lead-up work from a host of Broncos. Parker converts.

    Broncos 12 Dragons 4

Now Brisbane force a line dropout at the other end after some nice attack from the Broncos.

But as the Dragons attack down their right, Dugan's pass goes into touch.

Dragons get a penalty from the kick-off return. Great to see some real footy being played tonight, in stark contrast to last night's wrestle mania. This game is shaping up as something special.

16th min: And the pressure tells as Jason Nightingale plucks a Benji Marshall kick out of the air for a try. Really nice take too. Widdop's conversion from out wide is a bit of a shocker.

    Broncos 6 Dragons 4

Six more to the Dragons. Pressure building ...

The Dragons go very close to a reply with some outstanding attack. Leeson Ah Mau makes the initial break before Gareth Widdop, Gerard Beale and Morris get involved ... but it comes to nothing as the Broncos knock on. The Dragons get another chance.

10th min: And Hunt makes the most of it as he dummies his way through the line and scores. How many times have we seen that this season? He's the most improved player in the comp. The ref sends it upstairs because there are arms under the ball, but it appears the ball has touched a blade of grass or two and the on-field ref had awarded the try. And it is a try. Corey Parker converts.

    Broncos 6 Dragons 0

Mitch Rein collects Ben Hunt after a kick downfield and the Broncs get a penalty where the ball lands. Great opportunity for the home side.

Penalty Dragons as they work it off their line. They'll get the first chance to attack.

Crowd looks to be more than 30,000 and both sides, not surprisingly, look up for it. Should be a good one.

No score early as the sides trade sets.

Brett Morris a bit dusty early. Looks like he's copped a knock in the "lower abdominal region". Deep breaths.

And we're finally under way ...

Lots of money coming late for the Broncos, and not surprisingly, they've won their past 7 matches against the Dragons and 9 of the past 10.

I take it back. As only they can, Channel 9 have trotted out some "pre-game entertainment". Why I have no idea. Sigh.

We may get a start before 8pm if we're lucky.

Justin Hodges was outstanding at fullback last weekend as the Broncos belted the Knights, so it'll be interesting to see if he can back it up tonight.

It's a game of fullbacks tonight. Former Brisbane fullback Ben Barba will start in the No.6 jumper again, while another former Brisbane fullback, Gerard Beale, gets a shot at the No.1 jersey for the Dragons.

And another former No.1, Josh Dugan, has been in good form for the Dragons in the centres.

    Kick-off is not far away.

Evening sports fans and welcome to tonight's coverage of Brisbane v St George Illawarra from Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

It's do or die tonight - the loser can start planning their end-of-season holiday.

Both teams are on 26 points and just outside the top eight. It'll take at least 30 points to get a start in the eight this year, so the loser just won't get there.

There should be a bumper crowd on hand for this one.

Brisbane Broncos v St George Illawarra Dragons at ANZ Stadium, Friday 7.45pm

Head to Head: Broncos 18 Dragons 13

Last clash: Round 4 2014 - Broncos 36 bt Dragons 20 at WIN Stadium

    Ladbrokes: Broncos $1.42 Dragons $2.95

    Betfair: Broncos $1.49 Dragons $3

Michael Chammas writes: The winner will keep their finals dream alive, the loser can start planning for 2015. If Josh Dugan and Benji Marshall overcome respective ankle injuries, the Dragons are capable of springing an upset. Their backline is in red hot form.

    Tip: Dragons by 2

AAP writes: The equation is simple for both teams - win and you're in. Well, for another week at least. The top eight door will all but slam shut on the loser of this game, setting the stage for an epic tussle between two rejuvenated teams. Brisbane are still buzzing from a last round 48-6 rout of Newcastle. The Dragons are ready to breath fire again after burning the Gold Coast 34-6 at home. Something has to give - and Brisbane will be backing themselves on Friday night. The Broncos have won the last seven clashes with the Dragons, who have not claimed victory at Suncorp Stadium since 2009.

Key: The halves. Both boast a pairing that seem like an odd couple on paper but still they click. How well the Dragons' Gareth Widdop-Benji Marshall and Brisbane's Ben Barba-Ben Hunt combinations shine on the night will go a long way to deciding a winner.

    • Dragons were never in the hunt. Could only score a couple of consolation tries when the Broncos were reduced to 12 men. The game was all over by half time with the Dragons showing the pathetic hopeless jokes they really are. MacGregor will be full of excuses. In fact the Dragons have been long on excuses for 3 years and I am sick of hearing it. Missing the semis for the 3rd year in a row it is time to put a stop to the nepotism and for Doust to fall on his sword.

    • Once again the referees demonstrate their total incompetency. The game has gone the way of cricket. Once you take away the authority of the referee by imposing non human technology and expecting the referees to gain that impossible level you instill the fear of failure and thus the human element kicks in to protect oneself and referees do so by not making any decision or making a decision under so much pressure it usually ends up being the wrong one

    • Ref standard just gets lower - this season there would be at least a half dozen professional fouls that should have ended with 10 in the bin so when do they finally pull the trigger? When it should not even have been a penalty of course - would never have happened against a Manly or Storm team for example - Cowboys? Well yes because it's finals time so go get em refs!
