HOFF NOT HASSLED On most occasions, you'd back the mack truck Manu Vatuvei to run straight over the top of Josh Hoffman. This time, the much smaller Broncos fullback made what has to be one of the best trysavers of the season. Vatuvei was on his way to the line after the siren, thundering down the right flank for what would have been a match-winning try. But Hoffman ducked the head and smashed his way into his legs to halt his progress. An immensely courageous play.
SLOGFEST This match was played in awful conditions but both sides put on a pretty good show given the weather. It was a low-scoring one, which you could have guessed at the start of the night, but showed both these teams are full of character. Brisbane had to withstand huge pressure at the end and the Warriors did likewise earlier in the night. Finals-type football.
SLAMMED Sam Thaiday looked off with the fairies in the second half when he copped a Vatuvei knee to the head. He wobbled his way off but returned to make a big contribution at the tail end. Brisbane played with 16 for most of the night after Dale Copley left early with a shin complaint.
KICKING ON Put this night down to kicking. Corey Parker, who is in superb form and made 55 tackles, hit three from three while James Maloney was 0-3. He made a bad miss off a penalty right in front in the second half that would prove telling in the wash-up.
FULLTIME Brisbane 10 Warriors 8.
80th min What a finish! Warriors throw it through all the hands, Vatuvei gets clear but Hoffman cuts him down with a brilliant one-on-one tackle! The Maloney kick sits in the in-goal and has three Warriors chasers but Beale just gets there to bat it clear. All of that means.... Brisbane win by two.
78th min Heart in mouth stuff here. The Warriors throwing everything at Brisbane but the Broncos hold tight. Hoffman looked all at sea under the Johnson bomb but dove like an outfielder to glove it at the back. The kick long, chase hard and the Warriors have 90m to travel. Brisbane lead 10-8.
75th min Warriors cough it up. Broncos did the job in defence. That was a very ambitious short ball from Friend to Matulino. Fired it at him right off the hip and it was never on in this slippery weather. Broncos lead 10-8 but are desperate to play some footy up the other end of the field.
73rd min Clutch save from Hoffman. The Warriors get loose on the right edge and the kick ahead is intercepted, although it bounces into touch. Warriors coming home with a wet sail in the wet weather and they feed a scrum 10m out from the Brisbane line. Huge pressure on the Broncos.
71st min With nine minutes left, I have no feeling one way or another who is going to get the win. Completely open contest that's going end-to-end at the moment. Hoffman equal to that bomb and now it's Brisbane's turn to run it out of trouble. They lead 10-8.
66th min Johnson stepping like he's back on youtube. His problem - everyone's seen it. He gets stopped in his tracks and the Broncos hold on to keep their 10-8 lead. Wallace kicks them out of trouble but Omar Slaimankhel gets the Warriors back on a roll. What a name. What. A. Name.
63rd min Warriors end it with a fizzer. Grubber is way too big. For once, I'd like to see someone leave one short of the line. No change to the score. Brisbane 10 Warriors 8.
61st min A bit happening. Thaiday is back out there and just as he arrives, Hoffman spills a bomb on his line with no chasers in sight and the Warriors will get a fresh set. Crucial plays perhaps - the stop on Wallace and now a big chance at the other end thanks to that error.
59th min Kevin Locke. So good. Ducks and weaves like Sugar Ray Leonard to get out of danger near his line. Thaiday was on the bench for Brisbane but has now retreated to the relative warmth of the dressing rooms. Will he be back? It's a balancing act. He took a huge knee to the head. And here's Brisbane! Wallace stopped near the line and he loses it!
56th min The huge Warriors crowd here tonight doesn't like it but the penalty sails over. Parker now three from three, Maloney none from three. Kicking making the difference. Broncos lead 10-8.
54th min The Warriors cough it up and concede a penalty to boot. On a night like this, there's little hesitation and Parker steps up to take the shot at penalty.
50th min Wallace sees some room and tries his hand on the last tackle. Gillett gets some space out wide but Beale is trapped 10m out. Not a bad result to be honest. A kick may not have done much better. It's Brisbane 8 Warriors 8 but the Broncos have Copley (shin) and Thaiday (KOed) out of action.
48th min Vatuvei climbs up for another successful grab but Sam Thaiday is left motionless on the ground. He chased hard and collided with the knee of the big winger, which is like putting your chin in front of a cannon. Looked out cold but is now being helped off the field. Suspect that's him done too. Huge loss for the Broncos.
45th min A narrow escape for the Warriors early and Brisbane looking good, like they did at the start of the first half. A forward pass there will slow them down a bit. No advance on the eight-all scoreline.
42nd min I can now confirm the confirmation that Dale Copley won't be back. The great Darren Lockyer was on TV telling viewers he may be back on the park, even though he is now in a suit and tie. Crowd is just 32,148, of which Copley is now one. Play has resumed, in the meantime. The drizzle hasn't taken a break.
HALFTIME Brisbane 8 Warriors 8.
39th min Things getting a little heated and a tad wacky here. Sam Thaiday talking to the officials after Brisbane get penalised for offside and marched a further 10 for some chatter. Maloney tries his luck from in front, 28m out. And he's missed that as well! Shocker of a kick. He's 0 from 3.
36th min Conversion is close but the cigar remains unboxed. Brisbane 8 Warriors 8.
34th min Manu flashes the big pearly whites as he dives over for the TRY in the corner. Just had to catch it and put it down basically (I still had my doubts) but he held his nerve in the slipper conditions. Scores are level at eight - kick to come.
32nd min Copley doesn't appear to be back. He's dressed in the civvies and back in the stands. I'll take that as a sign he's done for the night. Broncos have to withstand a repeat set here but for the moment, they lead 8-4.
29th min Near thing again for the Broncos. Wallace is having a terrific game and his little chip causes panic in the Warriors in-goal. Alex Glenn was the man best positioned to turn it into points but it just beats him over the deadball line. "Confounded," he says to himself as he jogs back to the line. "I almost scored a try for my team, gosh darnit."
27th min Wallace tries the grubber but knocks it on as he regathers. The Warriors get out of troule for... seconds there. They lose it after Vatuvei tries a clinically insane pass in front of his posts. Whoops.
25th min Wallace getting kinda awkward white-guy high fives from his team-mates for that 40-20. Very valuable contribution as the ball slides on the turf and over the sideline. He'll feed the Brisbane scrum 10m out. Brilliant opportunity to land another blow.
23rd min Great defence from Thaiday and Hoffman. Shaun Johnson was the beneficiary of a tap-back from his side's bomb and only had a few metres to run. But that Broncos pair sandwich him and do very well to keep him out in these slippery conditions. Now Brisbane attack down the left, where Te'o has moved into the centres. Brisbane 8 Warriors 4. And Manu has taken ANOTHER bomb in the wet. Grand effort.
20th min This has turned into a willing sort of game despite the awful conditions. The Warriors making big metres up the middle and Ben Hannant is now on to try and counter that for the Broncos. Superb work there from Locke to duck down and get out of the in-goal and a poor penalty against Brisbane. Too keen to chase and they let the Warriors off the hook.
17th min No dice for Maloney on the conversion, which was about 10m in from touch. Hooks it like me over-gripping a drive down the 10th at Royal Gympie and the score remains 8-4 to the Broncos. Daley Copley off early for the Broncos and is limping up the tunnel. Ben Te'o on the park.
15th min Too much ball for NZ and too much speed from Kevin Locke. Finds himself on the of Wallace and Hodges couldn't close the gap in time. Well-worked TRY and it's Brisbane 8 Warriors 4.
13th min Good kick from Maloney and Hoffman is rushed by NZ defenders and trapped in-goal. Repeat set for the Warriors, who been stuck a little bit here by Brisbane's rapid-fire start. And there's another drop-out coming. Good pressure. Brisbane 8 Warriors 0.
11th min It's a Corey-a-thon. Warriors give away a penalty right in front and Parker kicks the penalty from, without overstatement, the same blade of grass as his conversion a few minutes ago. It's 8-0 to the Broncos.
8th min Corey Parker adds the extras to Corey Norman's try. That may be the best Corey and Corey combination since Haim and Feldman.
7th min Looks good for Corey Norman. A little grubber for himself (take note, Mitchell Pearce) and he looks like he's regathered to score. Decision pending (wait for it, wait for it)... TRY to the Broncos. They lead 4-0 with a regulation conversion in the pipeline. It's 4-0.
5th min Some decent early territory for the Warriors but no love on the scoreboard. Not even a bit of a fondle really. Brisbane bash it out of their own end and Vatuvei takes (just) what I assume will be the first of 487 bombs sent in his direction. No score thus far.
1st min The game has started and already some bad news. The twitter hashtag #NRLBroWar is not being used tonight. Talk about kicking an own goal. They've gone with #NRLBriWar instead. Zzzzzzz. It's still raining.
Preamble Welcome to a drizzly and plain old ugly night at Suncorp Stadium. Brisbane are back at home with a full compliment of Origin players and will have loved the bye. The Warriors, who have packed the weather with them, are coming off a half-decent win over the Titans that didn't really set the world on fire, although there are street performers here to do that pre-game. Jack Reed missing for the Broncos, with Alex Glenn moving into the centres. This is a good pre-finals test for both sides should they progress to the post-season.
