    Cronulla Sharks v Penrith Panthers

    Date
    Sort posts by:

The Mermaids are dancing and "Up, Up Cronulla" is blasting out of the speakers as the Sharks and their fans celebrate a gutsy victory. The black, white and blue are big arm wrestlers and this afternoon they only just out-oomphed the Panthers. Michael Gordon and Wade Graham were excellent for Cronulla, who were good value, despite losing Todd Carney early on. The Panthers led for most of the match and will be gutted they couldn't snatch the two points. Once again, Wallace and Moylan were outstanding, and Tim Grant played his best game for yonks, but in the end the footy Gods smiled on the Sharks, who picked up only their second win of the season.

    Sharks 24 Panthers 20

    79th minute:

Paul Gallen and Nigel Plum have just had a massive head clash and Gallens' face looks like a meat tray after the dog's had a go at it. Cripes.

    Sharks 24 Panthers 20

    79th minute:

Wow - what a finish. Whare bolted over the line as the Cronulla defence thinned out wide but he spilled the ball on the putdown. In addition, Docker was penalised for obstruction. That's cruel for Panthers fans.

    Sharks 24 Panthers 20

    77th minute:

Humdinger of a try to the Sharks. Gallen started it, running to the left and setting up Wade Graham for a killer run that ended with Robson crashing over for the vital four-pointer. Graham converts.

    Sharks 24 Panthers 20

    73rd minute:

Whare stepped inside Leutele and rocketed down the left flank before passing to Wallace who scored without a hand being laid on him. Soward converts.

    Sharks 18 Panthers 20

    68th minute:

Sharks hit back. Michael Gordon steamed through to catch a Robson bomb on the full, out-leaping Moylan and scoring underneath the posts. Spectacular stuff. Like Russell Fairfax in his prime. Gordon converts. Sharks lead for the first time.

    Sharks 18 Panthers 14

    67th minute:

Big let-off for the Sharks. A crossfield Wallace bomb was gobbled up by Simmons but his right boot was out of play as he threw the ball back in play.

    Sharks 12 Panthers 14

    64th minute:

Silly play, Andrew Fifita. He and Grant have been niggling each other all arvo, but the Cronulla No.8 went on with it after tackling his opposite number 35m out and the ref blew his whistle. Soward pilots the ball over for the two points.

    Sharks 12 Panthers 14

    61st minute:

Gallen is looking more energised this half: heaps more trademark bulldozing runs from the NSW captain.

    Sharks 12 Panthers 12

    60th minute:

Panthers go close. From a Wallace bomb, Mansour rose to pluck the synthetic pigskin from the stratosphere but landed awkwardly on his shoulder as he put the ball down. Alas for the Panthers, Docker had knocked on at dummy half. Ever so slight - but definitely a knock-on.

    Sharks 12 Panthers 12

    58th minute:

Fifita looks dangerous when running on the edge of the ruck, but he's coughed up the ball several times this arvo. You'd think, having just signed a 4-year contract with the Endeavour men, his mind would be on the game...

    Sharks 12 Panthers 12

    56th minute:

The equaliser: Cronulla grab a penalty for holding in the tackle, and Gordon smashes over the two from 37m out.

    Sharks 12 Panthers 12

    54th minute:

Ex-Shark Tyrone Peachey is electric when he gets the ball - real handful for the Cronulla defence.

    Sharks 10 Panthers 12

    51st minute:

Ooh, that was close. Dean Whare split the Sharks' defence out wide but his Gidley-style flick pass was too low for Dave Simmons to grasp.

    Sharks 10 Panthers 12

    49th minute:

Another Cronulla six ends with an ordinary Robson bomb and an easy take for Mansour. The Sharks are missing Carney's class.

    Sharks 10 Panthers 12

    47th minute:

Another poor end to the six for the Sharks. John Morris's  attacking pass found Feki - on the touchline.

    Sharks 10 Panthers 12

    44th minute:

Big Nige Plum has coughed up the ball after a bone-rattling tackle by Tagatese. Boy, does he look filthy. Sharks attack 40m out.

    Sharks 10 Panthers 12

    42nd minute:

Cronulla mount the first attack but Robson's sixth tackle bomb is a deadset fizzer and the Panthers get a 20m restart.

    Sharks 10 Panthers 12

A few twitter wags are asking whether the Sharks can sign up Benji Marshall for the second half...

Penrith dominated the first 30 minutes and looked to have the Sharks on the rack, but Cronulla came roaring back in the last 10. Peter Wallace and Matt Moylan have been outstanding for the Panthers, while Wade Graham and Michael Gordon have been Cronulla's best. The Sharks lost Todd Carney early on - out with a hammy injury - but coach Peter Sharp will be pleased at the way his charges have adapted without their chief playmaker. Ivan Cleary will be worried that his team's dominance hasn't yielded more points. Should be a belter of a second half. Back in five.

    Sharks 10 Panthers 12

    37th minute:

Jeff Robson's ordinary grubber was snaffled by Segeyaro but he coughed up the pill when Michael Gordon tackled him, enabling Robson to throw the loose ball to Luetele, who strolled over. Great aggressive defence by Gordon. Definitely against the run of play. The Panthers have had 57% of the ball, the Sharks only 43%. Gordon converts.

    Sharks 10 Panthers 12

    33rd minute:

Paul Gallen hasn't been as inspirational as he was last week. He seems a little lethargic.

    Sharks 4 Panthers 12

    31st minute:

Bombed Panthers try from a set-piece. Wallace passed to his right to Manu who threw a lethal inside ball to Moylan, but as he spun out of the tackle and lurched for the line the ball broke away. He had seemed certain to score.

    Sharks 4 Panthers 12

    29th minute:

Sam Tagatese is in formidable battering ram form this arvo. He virtually KO'd Gibbs and Graham with a power run up the guts.

    Sharks 4 Panthers 12

    27th minute:

Injury update: Carney is not coming back - he's already iced up in the dressing room.

    Sharks 4 Panthers 12

    23rd minute:

Cronulla already have hands on hips. Not a good sign. Whereas the Panthers are brimming with enthusiasm. They've completed every set so far and only made one error.

    Sharks 4 Panthers 12

    20th minute:

It's end to end stuff. Moylan made a spectacular 50m break and in the ensuing backline movement, Simmons received a classy, batted-on Whare pass and scooted over in the corner. Soward rifles over another sideline conversion.

    Sharks 4 Panthers 12

    17th minute:

From the ensuing six, Carney took a nifty inside ball and powered towards the line, wriggling out of a tackle then bouncing up off the green stuff to plant the ball over the stripe. The only downside for the black, white and blue is that Carney seems to have picked up an injury in scoring that four-pointer. Possible hamstring. Wade Graham has shifted to five-eighth. Gordon's conversion fades away.

    Sharks 4 Panthers 6

    15th minute:

First penalty goes to the Sharks for lifting in the tackle. They attack 40m out.

    Sharks 0 Panthers 6

    10th minute:

Penrith have all the momentum. Soward's earnt them a repeat six with a quality grubber Gordon was forced to bat dead.

    Sharks 0 Panthers 6

    8th minute:

Wallace chipped to the corner, Beau Ryan lost the ball in mid-air and Josh Mansour picked up the crumbs. It was a smart low trajectory kick from Wallace. Soward coverts from the sideline.

    Sharks 0 Panthers 4

    7th minute:

Michael Gordon's sidestep is very crisp this arvo. He's already stood ups a couple of Panthers.

    Sharks 0 Panthers 0

    5th minute:

Beau Ryan's first involvement in the game is a tremendous leap to pull down a Wallace bomb. Spectacular stuff.

    Sharks 0 Panthers 0

    4th minute:

Jamal Idris has already made a couple of punishing runs. He seemed to be in a slumber up on the Gold Coast but his game has really ramped up a gear since his move to the Panthers.

    Sharks 0 Panthers 0

     2nd minute:

    Late team change:

Wright is out for the Sharks and Ayshford is in.

    Sharks 0 Panthers 0

There's a touch of a southerly: which will help the Sharkies in the first half.

    Sharks 0 Panthers 0

Crowd looks to be nudging 10,000 and the Mermaids are in fine form. Is there a better place to be on a Saturday arvo?

It's a warm but cloudy day in Sydney's south for the clash between Cronulla and Penrith. The Sharkies were strong last week against the Roosters with Paul Gallen playing a blinder and this afternoon they'll have Beau Ryan returning. (Can't wait to see him come face to face with Jamie Soward, who recently took severe umbrage at the Sharks winger's TV skit on him.) The Panthers have been in good form so far this season - Matt Moylen is one of the comp's gun fullbacks and Peter Wallace has formed a neat halves combo with the aforementioned Soward. Should be a cracker of a match - both teams entered the comp in 1967 and there's always a fair degree of residual  niggle. Kick-off in five.

    • No mention of that disallowed try on the live chat but watching it again good call by the refs team. As the commentator was saying, decoy runners have to continue through the line, not stop in the middle of the defensive line, automatic penalty and a fair rule.
