As my colleague Dan Nancarrow just tweeted, that was a drop-a-thon that somehow ended up being played like a semi-final. Brisbane win in an absolute slog at the end as they hold out the Cowboys 16-12. At halftime, I doubt anybody would have seen that sort of finish coming. There were enough handling errors to make you wonder what was on the other channel. Then, it went up about 35 gears. Players were throwing themselves into everything with reckless abandon and the pace of this new-style game had them off their feet. Brisbane looked ravenous for the win though and found the killer player. Hunt patrolled the blind, hit Copley, who found McCullough to score under the posts. The Cowboys travel home without a kitchen sink and the points. Plenty of pundits had a fork through Brisbane before the season started. Now they are two from two, has anyone changed their mind?

And finally, amid all of the brilliant action on the field, another note to say well done to both sides for honouring the memory of Daniel Morcombe. The teams wore red armbands tonight in a very nice touch from both clubs. Donate to the Daniel Morcombe Foundation here if you'd like to help out a wonderful cause.

FULLTIME Brisbane 16 North Queensland 12.

Brisbane hang on! What a gutsy win.

Desperate stuff. Wowee this game has shifted up a few gears. Thurston with a last-gasp lunge at the line but he can't get there and loses the ball in the mad scramble. Brisbane drop it out with 10 seconds left. They lead by four.

Cowboys have the ball. They have two minutes to go 80m.

No mistake from Parker. Brisbane on top 16-12 with less than five minutes to play.

Copley through! Passes inside and McCullough goes under the posts! TRY Brisbane with six minutes to go. It's 14-12 with a kick to come.

Ten minutes to go and we are officially in the desperation zone. Players throwing themselves into absolutely everything here. Now we're talking. Brisbane working it out of their end as Ray Hadley next door almost has a melt-down. Cowboys lead 12-10.

May be a try here to the Cowboys. Linnett thinks he's got this down and the video referee will take a look. NO TRY.

This game is very 'round two'.

Barba limping but still on there. Not looking particularly flash though.

Hunt's over! But it's a penalty for obstruction. And they haven't even gone upstairs. McGuire I think it was. He was trying to get back onside and Hunt used him as a shield. He's having quite the night, Josh McGuire. On report twice and now in the middle of a disallowed try. Still 12-10 to the Cowboys.

Mistake here from the Cowboys at their own end. GOLDEN chance for Brisbane here. And a huge all in BRAWL... sorry.... PUSHING SESSION WITH SOME STRONGLY WORDED WARNINGS has broken out. Luckily, the players have released each other's jumpers and walked away with only some feelings hurt.

I can confirm that Jason Taumalolo is a complete manimal.

Silly from Josh McGuire as he attacks the legs of Lui after the kick. Now the Cowboys have a penalty where it landed, which is almost right in front of the Brisbane posts. And he's on report - again.

No good with the kick, is Thurston. Let's make it 10-10 with half an hour left to go at Suncorp.

Possible try here for the Cows. Lui dinked it across and Feldt has knocked it back for Gavin Cooper. Maybe the put down is the only issue but this looks... like... a... TRY to North Queensland. It's 10-10 with a kick on the way.

The Cowboys get a decent look here but fumble on the final tackle trying to make something of Thurston's cross-kick. Now Brisbane try to counter-attack and drop it themselves. Whoa momma. What else is on?

Play is back. I'm a bit sad after Souths lost to Manly (again) but will try and keep myself composed long enough to get to the end of this one. Both teams really need to pick up the quality here. Brisbane had the final say in the first half though and have probably looked just the better of the two.

HALFTIME Brisbane 10 North Qld 6.

And after all that.... TRY to the Broncos. Finally someone managed to hold the football for a few tackles and Brisbane tried some daring offloads. It all paid off as the Cowboys were strung out in defence and Josh Hoffman, the great five-eighth (never in doubt), sneaks through a lovely left kick. Daniel Vidot had it all to himself, aside from a few other Broncos players, and scores in the corner. Conversion is no good but Brisbane lead 10-6.

Oh dear. It's turned into a comedy of errors. Everyone was laughing until they looked at how much their ticket cost. It's 6-6.

The pace has slackened a tough here as these sides slip into something resembling a tempo. Exchanging sets between their respective 20m lines at the moment and waiting for one side to blink. It's 6-6 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the half. Some poor handling here by the Cowboys though and Brisbane will feed the scrum on their 40m line.

Penalties look to be even more damaging for teams under these new rules. Cowboys get a penalty on their 10m line, end up with the mini-bomb on Brisbane's line in a set of six. Metres easier to get with the wrestle going out the door.

Thaiday dangerous for Brisbane. Looks a bit better when he's not smashing it up the middle. Hunt's kick is far too deep though and the Cowboys get an easy reprieve.

Linnett goes high on McGuire. Collars him with a clothesline. Clumsy stuff and McGuire is up and about after taking a while to get to his feet. Initially, both referees just let is slide despite having a perfect view but then blow a penalty after seeing the man was hurt. So... my question... if McGuire toughs it out and gets up and plays it, there's no issue? But because he stayed down, it's now a penalty? Anyhoo, it's 6-6 after 20 minutes. Good type of game.

Gavin Cooper down and Josh McGuire is on report. May have bopped him on the nose. The Cowboys get running again now and have certainly found their mojo now. Brisbane defend grimly on the line and force the knock on. Well played to that young man.

Thurston makes it 6-6. I'm loving the new speed of the game. Frantic footy. Go on then.

The Cowboys get a penalty and Thurston goes for the tap... but Brisbane manage to bring him down (just). And here we go... Morgan is over but I think McCullough has held him up. But it doesn't last long... Tamou romps through, Thurston in support, spins... TRY North Queensland. It's 6-4.

Barba scheming... but the grubber has gone too far and Reed's dive was in vain. A restart for North Queensland but they're only clinging on after 13 minutes. Broncos lead 6-0.

Good bomb from Hunt and Maranta almost comes up with a handy flick-on there but the support player couldn't handle. This has been an emphatic opening 10 minutes from Brisbane. Can they keep up the pace? Cowboys have barely had a meaningful touch.

Wow. Kyle Feldt with a 60m drop out. That had some wheels. But it makes no difference as Brisbane strike with the first TRY. Matt Gillett under the sticks. Barba with an inside ball and Gillett opens them up like a tin of sardines. Oh, so, simple. Broncos lead 6-0 after seven minutes.

Brisbane get the first crack at the Cowboys line. Hunt is busy early and Jack Reed tests the visitors with a little grubber. Drop-out and Brisbane reset. Handy start for the home side.

Teams on the park, good crowd in... know it feels like the NRL is in town. Cowboys to start proceedings. And both teams wearing red arm bands to support the Daniel Morcombe Foundation tonight. It's a lovely touch. Here's the link if you would like to make a donation to a wonderful cause and support an extraordinary family.

It's back. OK, technically the rugby league season started last week, although you wouldn't really have known it in Queensland's south-east, which doesn't mind a bit of footy occasionally. Delayed telecasts, zero NRL games... at least the Roar were having a kick. Fast forward one week and copious amounts of debate about why players can't stand journalists later and we find ourselves at Suncorp Stadium as the Broncos host North Queensland.

Both of these sides won their opening round matches, with Brisbane producing a mild upset of the Bulldogs and the Cowboys finishing over the top of the Raiders. The Broncos had a strange pre-season, playing well at the Nines before trialing like a horse with three legs. But they showed some desire and execution in defence and will need all that and more tonight against the Cowboys.

Anthony Griffin said during the week that the eradication of the dreaded 'wrestle' could put the game at the mercy of the great playmakers. If that's the case, advantage Cowboys. But I think this one is a genuine toss of the coin. Should be about 40,000 here tonight, so that might keep Todd Greenberg's bloodpressure down for a week or two.
