Live: Canberra Raiders vs NZ Warriors

Nathan Gilson

Thanks for joining me on today's live blog. The Raiders produced a big second half, with 38 unanswered points, although will meet sterner resistance in the finals than what they ran into with the Warriors. Raiders 42-22

Sharks half-time: The dream of a Canberra home final is one step closer with a big win in Auckland, while the Cowboys are doing the business on the other side of the equation, leading the Sharks 18-12 at half-time at Toyota Stadium. Cowboys 18-12

Full-time: Raiders 42-22. The Raiders came storming home in the second half, a sad end for Warriors stalwart Michael Luck. The Raiders are still alive for a home final, with the Sharks and Cowboys already underway at Shark Park. Josh McCrone was influential for the Raiders, although it was the entire Canberra team who stood up in the second half. However, the Warriors were terrible in the second half, with one of the worst defensive displays I have ever seen.

79th minute: Glen Buttriss puts in a terrible kick at the end of a set, but from the smile on his face the Raiders hooker doesn't mind too much. The Warriors will wind down the clock with a final set.

76th minute: TRY! Josh Papalii gets in on the act as the Raiders go the length of the field. The Warriors are barely even an NRL side in this second half. McCrone has another try assist. Croker misses his first conversion. Raiders 42-22

72nd minute: TRY! The Warriors have absolutely given up the ghost. Reece Robinson bursts through for his second after a good break from Papalii. The Raiders have put on 32 unanswered points in the second half. Croker converts. Raiders 38-22

70th minute: Penalty to the Raiders. They kick for goal to run down the clock and Croker extends their lead once again. Raiders 32-22

68th minute: TRY!!! Blake Ferguson gets a quickfire double! The Raiders are rampant in this second half. Ferguson chased through on a bomb and came down with it. Canberra will be playing the Cronulla Sharks next week, it's just a matter of where. Croker converts again. Raiders 30-22

67th minute: Croker converts to put the Raiders ahead. Raiders 24-22

66th minute: TRY! a cross-field kick from McCrone is pulled down brilliantly by Sandor Earl who flicks it back to Ferguson to put down. A great try for the Raiders to go level. The video referee has a about a thousand looks at the grounding but finally gives it.

62nd minute: The Warriors throw the ball around and can't quite break the Raiders down. A try there would have almost certainly sealed the game, but as it stands, the Raiders still look the better side.

56th minute: TRY! Reece Robinson makes a break from 10 metres out on the back of a Warriors drop out. The Raiders are coming home with a wet sail. Croker nails the conversion. Warriors 22-18

54th minute: Raiders go so close to scoring, with Croker making a bust but the final pass gets intercepting by Billy Tupou running back towards his own line. A huge play from the winger!

51st minute: Canberra is starting to get a roll on. The Warriors haven't been able to put anything on in the second stanza. And what do you know, as I'm typing the Raiders give up the ball with a knock on. Scratch that last comment.

45th minute: TRY! Shaun Fensom barges over after a good break up the middle. Croker converts. Here come the Raiders. Warriors 22-12

43rd minute: The wind is still playing a massive part with kicks and even long passes being blown all over the place.

Half-time: A Raiders home final is looking like a pretty slim chance at the moment, with the Warriors dominating the opening 40. Manu Vatuvei came up with the biggest plays of the half, but strong defence and ingenuity with the ball have been the real reasons behind their 22-6 lead. If the Raiders lose, they'll end up traveling to Townsville next week to face the Cowboys, which would be a tough trip in the first week of the finals. However, the strong breeze in the second half should help the visitors.

40th minute: What an amazing play! The Raiders keep the ball alive for one last shot, with Josh McCrone seemingly getting the ball down. However, the referee deems he bounced the ball in goal and didn't have downward pressure. A big call from the ref, not even going upstairs. It was pretty amazing stuff in the last 20 seconds, with offload after offload keeping the ball alive. Pity it took the Canberra side 40 minutes to come up with some creativity.

39th minute: The Raiders end an unremarkable set with a grubber, which somehow Vatuvei gets back into the field of play, only for Konrad Hurrell  to lose the ball. Bad mistakes from both teams.

35th minute: TRY! Pita Godinet darts over after a hint of an obstruction. It was just a poor read from Tom Learoyd-Lahrs though. The Raiders will have the breeze in the second half but are letting the Warriors run away with it. Maloney converts. Warriors 22-6

34th minute: The Raiders give away a silly penalty for offside near the Warriors line. Just when they had a chance to gain the ascendancy.

33rd minute: The Warriors are moving the ball about nicely, but get forced over the line with a loose pass. The Raiders are struggling to cope at the moment.

30th minute: Josh McCrone has the Voldemort mask on for a blood nose. Strapping tape right around his head. I still don't think it's going to scare Vatuvei though.

27th minute: TRY! THE BEAST AGAIN! Vatuvei barges over in the next set. He's unstoppable this afternoon. Question of a forward pass in the lead up though. Henry misses the conversion. Warriors 16-6

25th minute: That's why they call him 'The Beast'! Vatuvei brushes past Josh McCrone and runs 50 metres before drawing a penalty. He was in the front row then the huge winger.

23rd minute: The breeze is playing havoc with the kicks today. First Reece Robinson's kick-off goes barely 20 metres, then a Warriors bomb just seems to keep on floating. It's tough work for the guys at the back. That's not even mentioning some of the passes.

20th minute: TRY! Ben Matulino barges over under the posts! That was soft from the Raiders, but who'd want that fella running at them??? Ben Henry puts through his second conversion. Warriors 12-6

18th minute: Reece Robinson throws an absolutely woeful forward pass to Sandor Earl. He's gearing up for the American football season.

16th minute: TRY! McCrone kicks for new halves partner Shaun Berrigan and the veteran, playing against his old club, puts it down right next to the posts. A nice kick from McCrone gets the Green Machine rolling. Croker converts, but it looks like he's left the talcum powder back in the Aussie capital. 6-6

14th minute: Dimitri Pelo gets smashed by Warriors front-rower Ben Matulino. Ouch, a big cold shoulder!

11th minute: An amazing kick-off with the wind taking it and Blake Ferguson bringing it down for the Raiders uncontested. What were the Warriors doing?

9th minute: TRY! Vatuvei makes no mistake that time and scores one of the simplest meat pies you'll ever see. He ran over uncontested after the Raiders were caught short on the right. The Raiders shot themselves in the foot with back to back errors. Warriors starting the better. Conversion goes in off the post. Warriors 6-0

8th minute: Josh McCrone drops an offload from Dane Tilse which puts the Raiders under pressure again.

6th minute: The Raiders bundle 'The Beast' Manu Vatuvei into touch with some great defence from Sandor Earl and Blake Ferguson. The big winger had to reach for the passs which drifted forward in the wind.

5th minute: The Raiders make the first mistake of the afternoon with a forward pass giving the Warriors some good field position.

4th minute: Josh Papalii puts through what must be his first kick of the season after Josh McCrone makes a nice bust. Papalii the first chaser does a great job to wrap up the Warriors fullback.

3rd minute: Both sides start with solid if unspectacular first sets. Robinson difuses a bomb well on his own line, with the Warriors enjoying a nice breeze in the first half.

Kick-off: The Raiders will start the match will Reece Robinson giving the Warriors the first use of the ball.

Pre-game: The Raiders are without Sam Williams and dynamic fullback Josh Dugan for today's clash with the Warriors, but the New Zealand side is without its exciting half Shaun Johnson, and James Maloney will start from the bench. Canberra starts as favourite, for good reason, but those are the type of matches the Raiders tend to struggle in. The prospect of a home final should spur the team on though.

Joe Picker will start for the Raiders, moving Joel Thompson to the bench. Dimitri Pelo comes in for Josh Dugan, however he will play on the wing with Reece Robinson at fullback. Hooker Travis Waddell will also be on the bench for the visitors.

Preamble: The Raiders play for what could be a home final, as the Warriors end a miserable season.
