Full time: An Anthony Milford masterclass has led the Canberra Raiders to a 36-20 win against the Gold Coast Titans at Cbus Super Stadium. Milford scored a double and had a hand in two more as the Raiders won just their fifth game of the season. The victory moves the Raiders (5-11) to 14th while the Titans (7-9) slip to 13th, but are only two points outside the top eight. The only downside for the Raiders was a hamstring injury to centre Brenko Lee.
80min: TRY!!! Faifai Loa puts up his audition for the Gold Coast Suns with a great high take to score his second try and give the Titans something to smile about. Gordon adds the extras. Raiders 36; Titans 20
78min: TRY!!!!! Another spectacular try from Anthony Milford puts the icing on the cake for the Raiders. Milford uses awesome footwork to send Croker into a gaping hole down field before backing up and getting the ball back from Croker. Croker misses the conversion. Raiders 36; Titans 14
75min: TRY!!!!! The Raiders have wrapped up their fifth win of the season after Josh McCrone scores under the posts. Reece Robinson is put into open space down the sideline before he throws a big pass back inside to McCrone, who finds the line untouched. McCrone has blood pouring from his nose and all over his jersey. Croker converts. Raiders 32; Titans 14
69min: TRY!!! The Raiders may have done enough to secure the two competition points! What a great short ball from Glen Buttriss to put Shaun Fensom over from close range. Croker converts. Raiders 26; Titans 14
67min: Raiders are easily getting out of their own end. Titans doing well to hold on, but their defensive line speed is non existent. Raiders 20; Titans 14
64min: Raiders centre Brenko Lee is out for the rest of the game with a hamstring injury. Titans are also without Albert Kelly.
62min: Great work from Josh Papalii to read the chip kick from Mortimer and stop the Titans' attack. Raiders 20; Titans 14
60min: The Raiders come up big with some strong defence to shut down the Titans close to the line. Raiders 20; Titans 14
58min: There will be a reshuffle in the Raiders' backline with Brenko Lee off the field with a leg injury.
56min: TRY!!! It's another possible try for the Titans as Gordon dives over in the left-hand corner. There's no doubt about that as Gordon clearly gets the ball down. In a bizarre piece of play, Brenko Lee walked off the field with a leg injury, then tried to get back on as Gordon scored on his side. Gordon misses the conversion. Raiders 20; Titans 14
55min: Don't count the Titans out of this one as Daniel Mortimer scores under the posts. But hang on, we're going to the video referee to check for a double knock on. Takairangi's grubber kick comes off Shillington, but also looks to come off Takairangi again before he picks it up and passes to Mortimer. NO TRY! Raiders 20; Titans 10
50min: A blow for the Titans with Albert Kelly coming off the ground with a leg injury.
Raiders finish set near our line. Kelly gone again with crook leg and comes off. #NRLGLDCAN— Gold Coast Titans (@GCTitans) July 13, 2014
46min: Dave Taylor running at Jarrod Croker is a weight mismatch of massive proportions. To Croker's credit, he holds his ground and brings the Coal Train down. Raiders 20; Titans 10
And we're away for the second half. Can the Raiders hold on or will the Titans fight back?
Twitter is still blowing up after that Anthony Milford masterclass in the first half, especially that miracle pass to Jarrod Croker. Here's some of the reaction:
That pass from Milford is alll you need to see to know he will be a star in the 6 for the Broncos next season.— Stuart Beadel (@BIGnosestu) July 13, 2014
Halftime: Anthony Milford has his fingerprints all over this game as the Raiders lead the Titans 20-10. Milford has scored one and set up two others in a dynamic 40-minute performance. Dave Taylor has been the best for the Titans, who are desperate to win to remain in touch with the top eight.
Here's some of the online reaction to the Milford pass
Milford. That is just unfair. What a dead set FREAK! #nrl— Jon Tuxworth (@Tuxy81) July 13, 2014
That's as good a pass as you will ever see from Milford. Gotta be bittersweet for Raiders fans.— Daniel Briggs (@DanielBriggs21) July 13, 2014
40min: TRY!!!!! Anthony Milford, you superstar!!!! That is a simply outstanding touch pass to find Jarrod Croker, who dances in front of a couple of Titans defenders for his 13th try of the season. Croker converts. Raiders 20; Titans 10
35min: This looks like a slightly strange move from the Raiders, taking the two points from a penalty for a late hit by Tom Kingston on Terry Campese. Croker makes no mistake to extend the Raiders' lead. Raiders 14; Titans 10
32min: TRY!!!!!! The Raiders hit straight back to re-take the lead as Dane Tilse throws a beautiful pass to find Anthony Milford under the posts. You couldn't have blamed the lanky front-rower for using his Giraffe-like arms to stretch out, but he smartly finds Milford looming up on the inside. Croker converts. Raiders 12; Titans 10
30min: Big props Dane Tilse and Shannon Boyd have come into the game for the Raiders, as has Queensland Origin star Nate Myles and Matt White for the Titans.
28min: So what can we take from the first 28 minutes? Dave ''the coal train'' Taylor is back to his spectacular best, the Raiders look good when they get Milford and Brenko Lee involved and someone needs to remind Sami Sauiluma to stay on his wing in defence.
23min: TRY!!!!! And it's Dave Taylor again with the sensational flick pass to put Faifai Loa over untouched in the corner. That's some ordinary defence from Sami Sauiluma to come off his wing and leave Faifai Loa unmarked. Gordon's conversion is on target. Titans 10; Raiders 6
22min: How about the reflexes on the Coal Train, Dave Taylor! Amazing take at his bootlaces to grab the grubber from Campese. Taylor runs 60m, finds his winger, but a great chase from Campese stops him 10m out. Raiders 6; Titans 4
20min: What a missed opportunity from Brad Takairangi! He had the intercept in his hands and was set to sprint 80m to score, but the ball slips out of his grasp. Raiders 6; Titans 4
18min: James Roberts is in a bit of pain, clutching his ankle after getting tackled awkwardly. He's jogging back into the defensive line and looks like he's shaken it off.
15min: TRY!!!!!! The Titans take advantage of the great hit from Carter as James Roberts scores out wide. Roberts is too quick for Jarrod Croker and gets on his outside to get over the try-line. Gordon misses the conversion. Raiders 6; Titans 4
14min: That was some hit from Paul Carter to force the ball loose from Jarrad Kennedy on the first tackle. Gives the Titans great field position. And now they get a penalty to really have the Raiders on the back foot.
13min: Did Kevin Gordon just butcher a Titans try? Hard to say as the Titans winger can't get on to a loose ball before it goes over the sideline, but looks like it may have been a knock on by Minichiello anyway.
10min: The Titans find touch from the kickoff as the ball takes a wicked bounce and evades Jarrad Kennedy. The Titans get a scrum just 20m out from the Raiders' line.
9min: TRY!!!! It's the perfect start for the Raiders and put that one down to Anthony Milford. A sensational play and offload from the Broncos-bound fullback to break open the Titans' defence and put Brenko Lee over the try-line. That's Lee's third try in as many games. Croker converts. Raiders 6; Titans 0
7min: Raiders are going wide early even when they're 20m out from their line. Getting Jarrod Croker plenty of early ball is a smart tactic to use given he's been their best this season and in the NSW extended squad.
4min: Two impressive first sets with the ball from the Raiders. Forwards getting plenty of metres down the middle of the ground through Shillington and Vaughan. But that's an equally nice kick from Daniel Mortimer to find touch 10m out.
And we're off and away at CBus Super Stadium, with the Raiders getting first use of the ball.
Before we get into it, here's a quick piece of NBA news - Paul Pierce has agreed to a two-year deal worth a reported $11 million with the Washington Wizards. The Truth is in DC!
For those of you wanting a punt (and of course gamble responsibly), the Titans are favourites with the bookmakers at $1.60 and the Raiders are $2.40. A massive loss for the Titans is having Greg Bird suspended, but the Raiders have won only once in six attempts at the Gold Coast.
Suffice to say this is a crucial game for both sides if they're any chance of a late surge towards the finals. The Titans are 13th on the table with a 7-8 record, while the Raiders are 4-11 and have lost seven of their past eight games. The Titans are coming off a dour, (ie boring) win over Souths on Monday night.
Interesting comments from Raiders coach Ricky Stuart on Fox Sports. He sees Reece Robinson as a fullback and not a winger. Robinson has played most of his career on the wing.
There's already been a remarkable turnaround in the under-20s game on the Gold Coast. The Titans have come 16-0 down to defeat the Raiders 60-22. That's not a misprint, 60-22
From 16-0 up, the Raiders have lost the under-20s 60-22. It's tough for them to make the finals now. #nyc— Jon Tuxworth (@Tuxy81) July 13, 2014
There's a couple of team changes for both the Titans and the Raiders. For the Titans, Kalifa Faifai Loa replaces David Mead on wing. The Coal Train, David Taylor, comes into the starting line up for the suspended Greg Bird. Tom Kingston is the new man on the bench.
As for the Raiders, prop Brett White has been rested and Paul Vaughan is in the starting team. Joel Edwards comes on to the bench. Reece Robinson moves on to the wing for Jeremy Hawkins, who was denied his debut due to the Raiders being over the second-tier salary cap.
Good afternoon. Lee Gaskin here from the picturesque surrounds of the Canberra Times office from Fyshwick. It's a lovely day in the national capital, and it looks just as good on the Gold Coast for today's match between the Titans and Raiders from Cbus Super Stadium. I'll have all the pre-game news leading up to the 2pm kick-off, along with the latest from our reporter on the ground at the Goldie, Jon Tuxworth.
