Manly Sea Eagles v Canterbury Bulldogs

    Date

    Andrew Sonter

    Sort posts by:

Manly were very slow to start, but once they got into gear there was only one team in it. Daly Cherry-Evans sparked the Sea Eagles, but his injury will be one of the key talking points in the aftermath.

That's all from here. Catch you next time

    Full-time. Manly 32 Canterbury 10

Chase Stanley, who's had plenty of knee problems, hobbles off with another one. He's a guy who deserves a break with injury.

2 mins to go. Manly 32 Canterbury 10

Jamie Lyon has limped off with a knee problem. Manly have got the bye next round and it doesn't look too bad.

If Manly win by 25 points or more tonight they'll replace the Dogs on top of the ladder - so a bit to play for here in the final 10 minutes.

More startlingly, if the Panthers beat the Gold Coast tomorrow night they can go to the top of the table. You could have got good money on that before the season started.

68th min: Manly seal the deal, and it's Brett Stewart who scores again. That's number 140. He chases through a bomb, out jumps Perrett and beats Brown to score under the posts. Lyon converts.

    Manly 32 Canterbury 10

The Bulldogs are making no headway here. They can't mount a serious challenge to Manly's try line. 12 mins to go and it's 26-10 Manly.

Time is against the Bulldogs now. 17 mins to go and it's 26-10 Manly.

55th min: Just when they looked gone, the Bulldogs get a lifeline. Chase Stanley scores in the corner after Manly can't clean up a cross-field kick. It's messy, but it's a try. Hodkinson shaves the post from touch, but misses.

    Manly 26 Canterbury 10

Taufua is on report for knees in a tackle on Perrett. It's clumsy in the slippery conditions, but there's not a lot in it.

Cherry-Evans has jarred the same knee he injured in Origin I. He won't be back tonight.

50th min: If it's Brookie then Brett Stewart must get on the scoreboard. And he does. He chases through a Keiran Foran grubber, gets a second kick on the ball and grounds it just before the dead-ball line. The ref sends it up to the video ref to check, but it's a try. That's number 139 for Stewart in his career. Lyon converts and Manly are just about home.

    Manly 26 Canterbury 6

You can't tackle kickers in the air around the legs, and Kasiano could be in trouble during the week. He complained that DCE was a long way off the ground, but that is hardly the point. And Kasiano gets a nice send off from the crowd as he departs - just replaced, nothing more.

Cherry-Evans is down again. Kasiano tackles him in midair after he kicks down field. He looks in trouble - again. Penalty Manly. Cherry-Evans hobbles off and Kasiano is on report.

42nd min: Manly get a penalty and take the 2 points. Lyon knocks it over from in front.

    Manly 20 Canterbury 6

And the Bulldogs have turned it over on the second tackle after the kick-off. A try here would just about get Manly home.

We're back for the second half. If Manly can hang onto the ball as they did in the first half they'll take some running down.

Brett Stewart gets hold of Josh Jackson.

Manly completed 19 of their 20 sets in the first half, which is why they were able to build that pressure at the back end. Great effort in the conditions.

Sam Kasiano offloads the ball during the first half.

Half-time, and this game has turned on its head. And DCE has been the spark. Manly were paddling after 20 minutes and then they scored three tries in just over 7 minutes.

The only person not impressed with Cherry-Evans tonight will be Laurie Daley. More sleepless nights ahead

35th min: And it's three in a row for Manly. Who said there was anything wrong with Cherry-Evans. He dummies, gets half through the line, offloads to Lyon and he offloads to Peta Hiku who scores out wide. Lyon converts.

    Manly 18 Canterbury 6

33rd min: And Manly are in again. Jesse Sene-Lefao picks up a loose pass from Watmough and scores beside the posts. It's sent up to the video ref to check the grounding, but it's a try. Lyon converts.

    Manly 12 Canterbury 6

And Manly force a dropout from the set after the kick-off. The home side are back

30th min: And like the young champ he is, Cherry-Evans sets up Manly's first try. He dummies, goes through, grubbers ahead, regathers and throws the final pass to Steve Matai. He might be on one leg, but he's still dangerous. That's Matai's 10th try of the year. Jamie Lyon converts.

    Manly 6 Canterbury 6

Cherry-Evans is still out there. He apparently only ran for the first time since Origin I yesterday. He's battling on.

    26 mins gone and it's 6-0 Canterbury.

There's nothing between the two teams, but the Bulldogs are just starting to edge on top.

Cherry-Evans is struggling here. Not a great surface if you're carrying a problem. We'll see how he goes.

17th min: The Bulldogs break the deadlock. Mitch Brown scores out wide after some great hands in the conditions. Tim Lafai's quick hands in the lead-up were the highlight. Hodkinson converts from out wide.

    Bulldogs 6 Manly 0

Josh Jackson makes a great run through the heart of the Manly defence, and the Dogs nearly score from a bomb shortly afterwards. That would be why Jackson was on the fringe of the NSW team for Origin I. It won't be long before he makes his debut in blue - maybe in the third game dead rubber after NSW seal the series in Origin II!

Both sides trading sets and few signs of either side cracking just yet, which would be why they're 1 and 3 on the ladder.

    12 mins gone, no score

Sam Perrett does well to take a dangerous (they'll all be dangerous tonight) Manly bomb. The Manly kicking game is already posing a few problems.

Manly nearly score through Jorge Taufua. He chases a Brett Stewart grubber through and nearly regathers. No score

The centre of Brookie is very sticky and muddy - just the way rugby league grounds should be. And people want to get rid of the suburban grounds. No score early

    We're under way here

The Bulldogs have a great record at Brookie, having won 7 of their past 11 matches there.

And, of course, Dessie Hasler returns to Brookvale for the third time since his controversial departure.

    It should be a cracker tonight - it's 1st v 3rd.

It's been pouring rain in Sydney today and the track is dead (at best), so points might be hard to come by.

Manly are coming off a rare hiding, at the hands of Brisbane, while the Bulldogs had the bye last weekend.

Anthony Watmough, who has hardly missed a game in a stellar career, is also back tonight for Manly.

    Kick-off is not far away.

Welcome to tonight's coverage of Manly v Canterbury from Brookvale.

The big news is Daly Cherry-Evans will take his place in the Manly starting line-up, which obviously means if he makes it through unscathed he'll be in the No.7 jumper for Queensland in Origin II.
