Manly Sea Eagles v Sydney Roosters

Manly are a great side. They rarely beat themselves by playing poorly and their big names really stood up in the second half when the game was in the balance.

Brett Stewart was outstanding after a few fumbles in the first half, and he's collected the TV man of the match award.

That's all from here. Catch you next time.

Manly will stay on top of the table after that win and the Roosters will stay in fifth because the Sharks have caused a massive upset in Brisbane, coming from 22-0 down to beat the Broncos.

That's full-time and Manly have got home 24-16.

You'd have to say the Roosters were the better team for a fair portion of that game and couldn't get over the line.

78th min: And then Manly do score, through Hiku, after kick hands from Stewart and Lyon. And again it's Aubusson who has to make the decision in defence and again it's not a great one. He's on a hiding to nothing against a great Manly right-hand attack. Lyon converts and they'll get home.

    Manly 24 Roosters 16

Stewart hammers Minichiello in goal after a grubber kick and forces a restart.

And Matt Ballin nearly scores from the short line dropout.

6 mins to go and it's Manly by 2.

Who will stand up and grab a win for their team.

Cracking game - as you'd expect.

67th min: Try Roosters and we're in for a great finish. Frank-Paul Nuuausala storms right through the middle of the Manly defence after a kick play-the-ball from SBW and Mitch Pearce backs up to score wide out. Maloney misses a pretty ease conversion to leave Manly in front.

    Manly 18 Roosters 16

Back to Brooky: Matai makes a long break, but again it comes to nothing as Manly drop the ball. This game is really breaking open, and the players are sucking in the big ones.

    Manly on the atttack.

    Manly 18 Roosters 12

A quick news flash from Brisbane: the Sharks have actually scored a point! I kid you not, they've scored a try. Actually they've scored again. Make that 2 tries. The drought is well and truly broken.

Great break from Roger Tuivasa-Sheck after brilliant work at the back from Anthony Minichiello - the old to the new. But the Roosters put the ball down and it comes to nothing.

53rd min: And Stewart is the beneficiary. He storms on to a ball from Kieran Foran to score beside the posts. It's a set-play from manly - and it was a goodun. Lyon converts.

    Manly 18 Roosters 12

As the penalties dry up, the Roosters are getting on top.

But the much-maligned Mitch Pearce kicks out on the full and Manly go back on the attack.

Great take from Lyon from a dangerous Roosters bomb. Skipper leading the way for Manly.

James Hasson is very unlikely to be back tonight for the Sea Eagles. Unlucky break for the youngster.

No score in the second half.

Manly turn it over on their first set, handing the Roosters an opportunity to go on the attack. But Steve Matai intercepts.

    Second half under way.

After some ordinary games during the Origin period, it's great to have a cracking Friday night fixture again. And in front of a full house at Brooky.

Neither of these sides will throw in the towel either, so it's bound to go down to the wire.

I'll be back with the second half shortly.

Mitchell Pearce takes on the Manly defence.

Time for a break. There's rarely much between these two teams, and so it proves again.

Manly started well on the back of a run of penalties, but the Roosters bounced back and finished the half well.

There were 7 penalties in the opening 12 minutes and just 2 for the remainder of the half. Maybe the refs were making a point.

    Back with more shortly.

    Manly 12 Roosters 12

Cherry-Evans kicks a 40-20, and Manly go very close through Buhrer. But they get a penalty instead, and Lyon knocks it over to level the scores.

    Manly 12 Roosters 12

Following a great break from Stewart, Manly force a line dropout. SBW does well to cover the grubber kick. Manly on the attack as half-time approaches.

Manly's James Hasson leaves the field after a head knock. He gets his head in the wrong spot and he doesn't look good.

31st min: And he returns in style, with a try. Cordner links up with his old mate Pearce to score a classic Roosters try. Maloney converts and the Roosters hit the lead - and they look the better team at the moment.

    Roosters 12 Manly 10

Boyd Cordner is on the field for the Roosters after a lengthy injury layoff.

After a slow start, the Roosters have worked their way back into this game. They're getting some leverage in the middle.

Brett Stewart attempts to escape the clutches of Frank-Paul Nuuausala.

23rd min: But they're not denied for long. Kenny-Dowall gets a great ball from who else but Sonny Bill and scores out wide. That's Kenny-Dowall's 91st try in his career. James Maloney converts.

    Manly 10 Roosters 6

The Roosters are denied a try. And it's Daniel Tupou's long legs that have gone against him. Aubusson did well to keep a Mitch Pearce bomb alive and Tupou just slides his left foot into touch before he gets the ball down in the corner. Lucky escape for Manly.

17th min: And Manly prove they can do it on the other side. Jorge Tafua scores in the left corner after great hands from Brett Stewart. The penalties are killing the Roosters. Lyon misses from touch with the conversion.

    Manly 10 Roosters 0

And Manly get another penalty coming out of trouble. They haven't had to kick from their own half yet.

14th min: Try to Manly, and it comes, as predicted, down their right-hand side. And it's a pretty ordinary read from Aubusson. Peta Hiku scores after some good lead-up work from Jamie Lyon. Given half a chance, Lyon will go after Aubusson again.

    Manly 6 Roosters 0

Manly have got a penalty 4 times when they've been working the ball off their own line. The Roosters have had a terrible record with giving away penalties in recent years, but it obviously works for them!

There have been 5 penalties already here. Could the refs be overreacting to recent criticism? Surely not.

Manly go down their favoured right-hand side and go very close.

The forward battle is getting very willing. The Sea Eagles are up for this.

Jamie Buhrer does really well to try and claw back a grubber that was over the dead-ball line and everyone else had given up on, but his knee was on the line and the Roosters escape.

Both sides hold firm in defence early.

Shaun Kenny-Dowall goes close to collecting a bomb at the end of the Roosters' first set, but he knocks on.

    We're under way here

In two of their past three games, these sides have failed to crack 10 points between them, so there's a chance on a dewy Brookvale surface this could be a low-scoring affair.

Anthony Watmough is a big loss for the home side, and they look a bit light on in the forwards.

Mitch Aubusson replaces Michael Jennings at left centre for the Roosters and Manly are very good on that side, so you'd expect Aubusson will see a fair bit of traffic toinight.

    Healthy crowd on hand.

Evening sports fans and welcome to tonight's grand final replay replay between Manly and Sydney Roosters from Brookvale.

Manly are as per program tonight, with Daly Cherry-Evans to play, while Heath L'Estrange will be on the bench in place of Frenchman Remi Casty for the Roosters.

    Kick-off is not far away.

    Brookvale Oval, Friday 7.40pm (AEST)

Last meeting: Round 4 2014 - Manly 8 bt Roosters 0 at Allianz Stadium

    Head-to-head: Sea Eagles 80 Roosters 43 Drawn 2

TV: Live, Channel 9 (delay Brisbane 9.30pm)

Ladbrokes: Sea Eagles $1.88, Roosters $1.96

Betfair: Sea Eagles $1.92, Roosters $2

Michael Carayannis writes: Grand final rematch take two. The Sea Eagles beat the Roosters Manly 8-0 when the two sides side’s clashed earlier this year, and it’s likely that another tight encounter will follow. The Roosters are in a better shape than they were in round four, while Manly have been hit by injuries and suspension.

    Tip: Roosters by 4

AAP writes: This grand final rematch promises to be one of the games of the season, with just Anthony Watmough (suspension) missing for Manly and Michael Jennings (back) out for the Roosters. Boyd Cordner (ankle) is a huge inclusion for the premiers on the bench with Mitch Aubusson to cover Jennings at left centre. Jamie Buhrer will start for Watmough as he did last week. Manly are the NRL’s form team and are always tough to beat at Brookvale. Both sides are coming off a bye and the Roosters did win at the iconic venue last year, but that was against a Sea Eagles outfit minus Brett Stewart. Manly’s only loss at home this year was the 23-22 round-one golden-point defeat to Melbourne. The Roosters are 5-3 on the road in 2014.

Key: Daly Cherry-Evans. The Manly No.7 is in sublime form and, despite an ongoing knee injury, has regularly toyed with sides in attack this year, especially at Brookie.

SEA EAGLES: Brett Stewart, Jorge Taufua, Jamie Lyon, Steve Matai, Peta Hiku, Kieran Foran, Daly Cherry-Evans, Josh Starling, Matt Ballin, Brenton Lawrence, Jamie Buhrer, Justin Horo, Dunamis Lui. Interchange: Jesse Sene-Lefao, James Hasson, Tom Symonds, Jason King.

ROOSTERS: Anthony Minichiello (capt), Daniel Tupou, Mitchell Aubusson, Shaun Kenny-Dowall, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, James Maloney, Mitchell Pearce, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Jake Friend, Sam Moa, Aidan Guerra, Sonny Bill Williams, Frank-Paul Nuuausala. Interchange: Dylan Napa, Isaac Liu, Boyd Cordner, Remi Casty, Heath L'Estrange (one to be omitted).

    Referees: Shayne Hayne, Gavin Morris.

    • The match blog finishes with "You'd have to say the Roosters were the better team for a fair portion of that game and couldn't get over the line."

Someone should tell not only the Easts club management, but also your commentators, that the object of the game is to finish with more points that the opposition.

So appearing to be the better team is no good unless you understand the rules, stop breaking them and giving away penalties, and finish with more points than the opposition.

Why doesn't the club run a little session each week to teach them the rules of Rugby League.

Since I first watched them playing in the mid 1950s, they have never learned that giving away penalties could lose them the match!
