New Zealand Warriors v St George Illawarra Dragons

s

St George-Illawarra have recorded their 9th straight win over the Warriors, putting on 25 points to the New Zealanders' zilch in the second half.

Their key man was playmaker Gareth Widdop, whose kicking, passing and running game was superb throughout. He is already looking like the buy of the season.

He was ably supported by halves partner Sam Williams and the blistering speed of Brett Morris. In the forwards, Trent Merrin was a colossus up front and Mitch Rein was rock solid.

The Warriors switched off in the second half. Johnson failed to take the ball to the line and Townsend was wayward at best. Matty Elliot will have his work cut out this week instilling some enthusiasm in his charges.

But Steve Price will be cheering. This was a great away win the by the Dragons in difficult conditions. It's early days but they look like a team to be reckoned with.

Ben Creagh picks up the crumbs after a dummy pass went astray and the Saints veteran pounced. Sloppy, sloppy Warriors. Widdop converts.

79th min:

What can't Widdop do - he's slotted a field goal with is left foot after he'd fallen off balance on his right side. Classy stuff.

78th minute:

Tomkins has coughed up the ball under pressure. Saints on the attack.

77th min:

The Warriors are trying too hard - they're obviously under the pump - but they're overplaying their hand and Matty Elliot is not impressed. Not at all.

Warriors 12 Dragons 24

76th min:

The Warriors were on the rampage 5m out but Townsend inexplicably threw the ball forward into a Dragon's bread basket.

74th min:

Ben Henry has fallen awkwardly in the tackle - and he's hobbling off. It's that troublesome knee again.

72nd min:

It's not over yet, but Steve Price must be a happy man. His charges have looked good in attack and defence this arvo.

69th min:

67th min:

Close. A spinning Johnson grubber was grabbed by Morris but he spilled the ball in the tackle - a metre out - and Palavi dived on the loose ball to score. Or so it seemed.

But the vid ref awarded a penalty to St George-Illawarra because Townsend, who disposessed Morris, was in front of the kicker.

66th min:

Johnson is doing everything to find a hole in the Dragons defence but so far the red and white white are solid.

Warriors 12 Dragons 18

64th min:

A period of sloppy play - with both sides dropping the ball, but the crowd, which numbers 14,500, is gearing up for a big finish from their boys.

A desperate Johnson grubber garners them a repeat six.

61st min:

Fisiiahi is showing great penetration in attack for the Warriors. He's a real handful for the red and white defence.

59th min:

It's almost in the Warriors DNA to do something crazy on the sixth from time to time. Townsend put up a dolly of a shallow bomb that gave no one on his side any hope of scoring and then Mannering took Quinlan out.

Now he's on report.

57th min:

A fantastic sweeping move from St George ended with Morris crashing over in the corner, but the replay showed his leg was out. That was scintillating stuff from the red and white.

54th min:

Warriors go seriously close. A fantastic inside ball from Nathan Friend, found Johnson whose jinking run bamboozled the Saints defence, but as he went to put the ball down over the line the ball was jolted out.

Warriors have turned it up a gear.

51st min:

Warriors penalty in front after Merrin held on too long in the tackle. They choose to run the ball and Johnson's sixth tackle grubber is palmed over the deadball by Morris. Good signs for the Warriors.

47th minute:

Pommy Cooper has been solid for the Dragons - 23 tackles and 7 hit-ups.

Warriors finally get the ball, but Bukuya drops it 35m out from the Dragons line. Frustrating for Matty Elliot.
