    Tough opening to Origin II

'Doctor' Paul Gallen's test of Billy Slater's injured shoulder struck an Origin nerve. Channel Nine.

The strains of Lou Gramm's Midnight Blue ring out around ANZ Stadium as the Blues go into nuclear meltdown at winning an Origin series for the first time since 2005. Can you believe that? The end of one of the most amazing streaks in Australian sport has come to an end. And NSW deserve it, no doubt at all. Qld really looked like steamrolling them at stages but the Blues held on and on and on, once again. Qld produced an effort stacked with errors and poor discipline around the ruck and paid the price. The Blues kept a clean sheet and by the end, under a barrage of pressure, Qld simply became frustrated and couldn't deliver the miracle play that's happened on so many occasions. Trent Hodkinson the hero for NSW with the winning try and the conversion, iron man Paul Gallen finally gets a series on the board. What an epic, what a series and now we have the very strange feeling of a dead rubber back in Brisbane in three weeks.

Thanks for logging on folks. Leave your comments and if you're a NSW fan, go and crack a cold beer. The state deserves a lager or two this fine evening.

    FULLTIME NSW 6 Qld 4.

GAME OVER. NSW are the Origin champions for the first time in NINE YEARS.

Slater held off the ball as the pass goes to ground. Penalty to Qld. They'll have ONE play.

Reynolds and Thurston on report. NSW surely just have to kick to the corner and see out this set to win the series.

Qld's attack falls apart again and now this is going to be a penalty to the Blues. Thurston with a very, very silly forearm to the head of Reynolds and that pair are absolutely ready to tear each other's heads off. This is really close to exploding. Two minutes to go and NSW are in the box seat, up by two with a penalty on the way.

Nothing fancy from NSW here. Qld start their set from their own line and have three minutes to save the series. Blues up 6-4.

NSW go close again but the Maroons hold on somehow. They start the set on their own line and have five minutes to get some points of their own. That call off the restart could have been catastrophic. NSW lead 6-4. And another tick in the error column for Qld. They just cannot hold onto the ball tonight.

And what about that! Qld's restart goes out on the full! Hold on... replay shows Woods touched it! Refs stop it for a moment but the Blues get the penalty from halfway. That is a shocker from the officials at this point in the game. Whoa.

Trent Hodkinson gets a meat pie.

The pressure was simply oppressive and it just had to crack. Five sets without the ball and the NSW half carves right through. He converts his own try and NSW hit the front in Origin II with seven minutes on the clock. It's NSW 6 Qld 4. Can they hold on? GAME ON.

Over! TRY to Hodkinson! Simple dummy does the trick and he scores next to the posts. Blues level up at 4-4 with a kick to come and eight minutes on the clock.

Thurston has done much better on Hayne tonight. NSW go that way again but he's cleaned up. Fifth tackle... they run and it's knocked down. Another set for the Blues. This is massive defence from Qld so far.

Poor pass back to Reynolds but it works out well for NSW. Jennings races through and catches Hodges behind the tryline so Qld must now withstand another set of six, their fourth in a row. They lead 4-0 - but for how long?

Hodkinson goes close! Inches away for the Blues! Now Bird! Short again! And now a penalty to the Blues. MASSIVE pressure on the Maroons.

Six to go for the Blues. Here we go folks... fresh set five metres out.

Smith stabs it deep and wants to pile on the pressure to NSW here. Woods the fresh man for the Blues and he carts it forward to give the home side a little rush of momentum. Up it goes but Slater is equal to the task. NSW have really just completed their sets and kicked high tonight. But another error for the Maroons here and the crowd is getting energised. Qld really have been the better outfit but errors and penalties are letting NSW right back into this. A try might just break someone's spirit.

These blokes are struggling to get up a canter at the moment. That's a really poor carry from Gillett, waving it around in one arm, and no surprise that he drops it in the smothering tackle from NSW. Qld lead 4-0 and still no tries in this game. Amazing really. There's 17 minutes of footy left.

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - JUNE 18: Sam Thaiday of the Maroons loses the ball over the try line in action a tackle by Jarryd Hayne during game two of the State of Origin series between the New South Wales Blues and the Queensland Maroons at ANZ Stadium on June 18, 2014 in Sydney, Australia. Hayne heroics deny QLD try

Some desperate defence by NSW superstar Jarryd Hayne cost Sam Thaiday a try. Channel Nine.

    PT0M37S http://www.canberratimes.com.au/action/externalEmbeddedPlayer?id=d-3aedf 620 349

Qld go close down the right but McQueen has the clumsy hands and drops it on the end of the move. The pass was a little behind him and there was cover rushing across but he might have had a chance to burrow over.

Hodges will defend the kicks by the looks of this instead of McQueen. He's played some fullback so that's going to help. Takes that one under a bit of pressure without too many issues and  Qld try to press forward. But that's a pushed pass and it goes to ground. Advantage NSW, who get the scrum feed on halfway. Qld lead 4-0 with a bit over 20 minutes to go. This pressure is ridiculous.

And hello, Chris McQueen is the new Qld winger. Pace to burn.

Stretcher coming on for Tate and big sections of this crowd cheering... I know it's Origin but that's not ideal. He's being helped off the field but and let's hope for the best. He's already had a few knee reconstructions.

NSW really under the pump here as Qld rush up in defence. They do well to make it to halfway and the clearing kick saves that set of six. Finds space and now Qld under pressure to get it clear without making the error. Tate down here and in massive drama..... knee I think. Hoffman signaled it right away and cleared the ruck as quickly as he could.

Big run from Daniel Tupou on the kick return and just as NSW get a spring in their step but can't control the ball. Still 4-0 to Qld. Knife edge stuff here at Homebush.

If you didn't see that, it really could have gone either way. Hayne knocked it from Thaiday as he dived but he seemed to regain the ball before putting it down. It was very, very tight in either case. Official call is no try and Qld retain that 4-0 lead.

Well, not sure how that's an obstruction. He didn't seem to run behind any players... but he might have spilled the ball over the line anyway. Hayne with the hand that knocks it away... NO TRY!

NSW under pressure here, Thaiday dummies, burrows his head and is this a try? They are saying NO TRY and checking obstruction. Stay tuned...

Qld looking ok here in attack but that high kick is easily taken by Daniel Tupou. Pressure was non existent. But Inglis with the one-on-one steal and Qld have it back! Just like that.

Bird on for the Blues as well. Early changes for both coaches as they look for that something to break this game wide open. If that in fact happens. Could we have a tryless Origin?

NSW a bit clueless there in attack and Beau Scott coughs it up. Qld run it clear and make some good headway. It's 4-0 to the Maroons and this is going to come down to who blinks first.

Good set from NSW, good kick and big chase. And they force the error! Fresh set to start 18m out. Time to build some pressure as the crowd erupts.

Clumsy backline play and Slater drops the inside ball. Wasn't anywhere near him really and NSW work it clear. Qld will surely have spoken about discipline at halftime.

Good kick from Thurston and Qld get a repeat set. Measured play from the five-eighth. Meanwhile, Hopoate has had a needle at halftime and doesn't appear to be able to move his arm. Just dangling by his side. Poor fella.

Oh dear... first tackle, penalty. Watmough with a lifting tackle on Nate Myles and is on report. Tamou over the top. Not sure if both men are on report, certainly Watmough has been booked. Not the start the Blues wanted.

    Away we go folks....

Qld go close! Hodges busts them open up the middle and DCE scoops it up, chips for himself and gets so close. It's the foot of Reynolds at the very last second that saves the day. But Qld finally get a repeat set - there's 16 seconds to go in the half.

Most of the half has been played in the middle third. I'm not sure there has been a repeat set anywhere. The crowd are starting to drift off here.

This has been a very tough game. But not a very good game.

Meninga will be going bonkers. Another Queensland mistake to give the Blues some decent ball. And here's Jennings from dummy half! Clean air but they grab him five metres out. The kick goes out, Tupou in chase.... and Tate grabs it without a drama. So three minutes left and it's 4-0 to the Maroons.

Johnathan Thurston celebrates becoming the greatest pointscorer in Origin history. Take that Mal.

Qld starting to get on top but give away ANOTHER penalty while NSW are in their own half. Slater with the good tackle on Hayne, fullback on fullback, but goes for seconds and is duly pinged. Dave Taylor maybe getting ready for some action in this final five minutes of the half as Qld barrel Hopoate into touch to put out this particular fire. So no tries at all here... Qld lead 4-0 after two penalty goals.

PS, I'm not writing DCE and JT because I'm their mate. It's just quicker and NSW don't have any players you can use the initials to describe. If they did, I would.

JT just broke Meninga's Origin points scoring record with 162 points.

No sin bin... penalty to the Maroons from right in front. Maybe you can throw a little punch if you are provoked first? I don't know. They've lost me. Probably the right call was penalty to Qld, sin bin for Myles maybe. Anyway, Thurston is good from in front and Qld lead 4-0 after half an hour of play.

And even more niggle, now Tamou and Myles. This is all getting a bit silly. Time to knuckle down and play fellas. Tamou with an forearm to the head of Myles and he throws a little punch. Qld blink first and he could be in the bin here.

NSW get another penalty and a piggy back out of their half. This is poor discipline from the Maroons. Boyd with the needless grab on the leg of Watmough as he gets up to play the ball. Only adding pressure to themselves as the Blues march up the field. But they lose it. Both sides very, very conservative in attack so far. Possession and pressure just absolute gold.

Absolutely no doubt NSW want to give plenty to Thurston, Slater and DCE tonight. They can just detect that latter pair aren't firing on all cylinders. It's a simple game plan but makes perfect sense. Qld lead 2-0 and we've got 15 minutes left in the half.

Maroons skipper Cameron Smith and Blues prop Aaron Woods get up close and personal.

Reynolds hits Thurston after the kick from the long run and JT battling. Looks like a cork or a ding, not serious I don't think, but he's hopping around like the field is a frying pan.

Most scrums are awful. But this could be the most awful of the awful. Qld eventually feed it and win the pill. Niggle galore here. Every second or third tackle there's a faceplam here or an elbow there.

Nate Myles whinging to Hayne about dirty play. Do me that will, non.

    — Andrew Webster (@awebstar1) June 18, 2014

Just a real arm wrestle here. DCE hit hard by Farah after that kick but survives. I can't help but think he's going to fall apart every time he gets tackled at the moment. Maroons leading 2-0 after 22 minutes.

NSW spill it as we see the first few changes of the night brewing. Lillyman and Te'o about to be injected for Qld, Watmough and Tamou for the Blues.

Another penalty to the Blues, a ruck infringement. Kickable but off they go with the quick tap in search of the first try of the night.

Penalty to the Blues... good timing for them as they weren't going terribly far in that set.

Whoa.... Tate runs it out and is lifted in the air again. This time there are enough Blues players to control it and put him down on his feet. But nobody wants to see more of that, from either side. It's 2-0 after 18 minutes. Qld with the slim advantage.

DCE smashed by Farah! But he bounces up and offloads. And now a penalty to Qld. NSW just need to temper the aggression a touch here. In other news, I'm not sure DCE can kick with that leg. Qld will line up for a shot at goal from right in front.

Loose carry and the Blues spill the ball. Gallen it is. Thaiday could have been done for a penalty there for a strip but gets the benefit of the doubt. The Blues are not impressed.

Inglis pushing off defenders everywhere. Pushing and shoving erupts but they just go back and play the ball. I think. Yep, fifth tackle now, Qld on the attack. Blues don't fall for the running play and it remains 0-0 after 10 minutes. Now more argy bargy, this time between Scott and Smith. JT with the little face slap on Scott and Smith cops the blame! Gold. Penalty to the Blues.

Oh dear. Slater tackled and lands on the shoulder, then cops a bit of extra hot sauce from Gallen over the top. He's a bit rusty after that one but no penalty given. Heart in mouth stuff for the Maroons.

Qld hang on but that looked pretty good from NSW. Maroons with a tap restart after the kick was knocked dead by the Blues chasing pack. Hodges raced up earlier in that set to shut down Hayne. Might be the play tonight. Risky though.

Penalty to the Blues and they will whack it down the park to set up an attacking set.

First run for Cherry-Evans and he didn't exactly leap up off the deck. That knee doesn't look great to me as the Blues gain possession and work it out from their 20m line. He was a bit proppy and tender after that contact. No score here.

Blues defend stoutly and Thurston's kick is bizarre. Slices it off the side of the boot and it ends up going backwards and into the arms of Ryan Hoffman.

Solid start for the Blues as they truck it out and clear safely. But not huge metres and Queensland already back up to the Blues 40m line after a couple of tackles. And there's the first penalty as well, going to the Maroons. Great chance here to get first blood, as they did in game one.

Bad news for the Blues with Hayne having gastro last night apparently. It could be a hero story in the making. Certainly, he gave Qld the... never mind.

Just about everyone in their seats out here already with about 15 minutes to go before start time. I have to be honest I'm not a huge fan of this stadium but they have packed in tonight to see the Blues take this out. Mal Meninga has been calm and collected all week - has he been bluffing? He says he'll know how Qld will play after 20 minutes.

Welcome one, welcome all, to ANZ Stadium as we count down to the start of Origin II. There is an overwhelming feeling of expectation surrounding the Blues tonight as they try to break an eight-year drought. The media is hyped, the crowd is hyped, I'm hyped but that's probably because I'm onto my fifth coffee since 5pm.

First, the team news. Daly Cherry-Evans will play tonight and starts at halfback for Qld. He's won the battle with the dodgy knee but boy oh boy you wonder how much punishment it can take. Betcha it gets a cheeky little test at the start of the game as well, probably after his first kick. Sam Thaiday returns to the starting line-up, Aidan Guerra gets a start, Chris McQueen drops back to a bench that also includes Dave Taylor and Jacob Lillyman, both returning to Origin.

NSW are as per program and have had a pretty smooth run into this game. Can they finally, finally, finally get one?

    • A lot of QLDERS not happy. You've been the best for so long, without doubt. The best team ever. But now beaten. If these comments are anything to go by, not very gracious in defeat. NSW dominated game 1, not game 2. Plenty of times QLD have won games without being the better team. And have had some (deserved) luck. Be grateful for your courageous players, be proud of your success and now congratulate NSW. It's really not that hard. ANC it won't kill you (I've done it for 8 years and am still here!)

Even in victory they can't even manage a good word for a team that has ridden roughshod over them for 8 years. NSW still don't understand what it takes to be true champions.
