In another season of mediocrity for South Sydney their pinpoint halfback has been a shining light and is on track to finish with a goalkicking percentage of more than 90 per cent for the second time in his career.

The 27-year-old has booted 61 goals at 91 per cent through 23 rounds this season, missing only six times from the tee and kicking perfectly in all but four matches in 2017. If recent form is an indicator, he ought to get plenty of opportunity to improve on that against the New Zealand Warriors on Friday night at ANZ Stadium.

Reynolds is on track to beat the 90.1 per cent benchmark he set in a remarkable 2013, where he finished with 100 goals from 111 attempts.

Finishing an NRL season with a percentage in the 90s is rare for a full-time goalkicker, but it has been done before.

Champion Data shows that Michael Gordon leads all comers in the past decade with 50 shots or more in a season. His 2009 season at Penrith returned 57 goals from 61 attempts at a whopping 93.4 per cent.

Ex-Canberra, Sydney Roosters and Cronulla kicker Todd Carney also broke the magical number in 2013 at the Sharks, finishing with 45 from 48 at 93.8 per cent.

But neither of them were able to rack up 90 per cent for a second season.

"It's something I've been working on for years," Reynolds said. "As a young bloke I grew up with a footy in the hand and I wanted the responsibility of being a goalkicker," Reynolds said.

"I worked extremely hard when I got into the top squad to correct that and get things right. I really pride myself on not missing too many goals – it's such a vital thing these days.

"It's important; every point counts. I still work extremely hard. I get the young fellas trying to test me out at training and take me on which is good, it's good practice.

"I just stay behind after training. It's my job to make sure I get that right. It's my responsibility to kick the goals and I've got to make sure I'm performing week in, week out."

Hot on Reynolds' heels this year as the league's sharpest goalkicker is Nathan Cleary, whose 88.4 per cent conversion rate suggests ominous signs for the future.

Johnathan Thurston was striking at 86.7 per cent for the year with just four misses, but he's only featured seven times for the North Queensland Cowboys.

This is where Reynolds' achievement becomes even more impressive.

Thurston, arguably the game's most consistent goalkicker in the past 10 years, has never finished an NRL season with a kicking percentage above 90.

Bulldogs greats Hazem El Masri and Daryl Halligan never did it, and neither did Jason Taylor or Matthew Ridge.

Ryan Girdler did it once in 1997, collecting 76 goals from 82 attempts at 92.7 per cent.

And Andrew Johns' best for a season was 82.3 per cent, barring his unblemished record in 2007 when he played just two matches and kicked all three goals he lined up.

Reynolds' worth as a kicker to the Rabbitohs was highlighted two weeks ago when he nailed a late sideline conversion at the SCG to hand his team a memorable two-point win over the St George Illawarra Dragons.

"The more pressure you put on yourself to perform, the better you become," Reynolds said.

"It just comes back to your process and your practice. You put a lot of work into perfecting your kick and if every kick's exactly the same, you don't have to worry about too much."
