Throw tackle mars Origin clash

Queenslander Brent Tate is sent flying by NSW playmaker Josh Reynolds in the first State of Origin match.

Queensland winger Brent Tate has launched an impassioned plea to the NRL to eradicate lifting tackles from rugby league, saying he had never been more frightened than when he was sent hurtling into the air by NSW playmaker Josh Reynolds in the Origin opener at Suncorp Stadium.

Tate was left gobsmacked when told Reynolds was hit with a grade two dangerous throw charge for the offence, which will see him miss a fortnight of football if he pleads guilty and three weeks if he unsuccessfully challenges the charge. Beau Scott, also involved in the tackle, was charged (grade one) but won't miss a game.

After a career that has been plagued by neck injuries, Tate said he was left shaking for 10 minutes after he rose to his feet following the tackle, which sent the Maroons into a frenzy as they rallied around their veteran winger.

Tate said his anger wasn't directed at Reynolds but the style of tackle. Just months after the Alex McKinnon incident, which left the young Newcastle forward paralysed, Tate said it shouldn't take another serious injury to force the game's administrators to up the ante and deal with the issue.

"Mate I've never been more frightened in all my life. My legs were shaking for about 10 minutes after that. I don't think I've ever been so scared in a rugby league match," Tate said.

No control: Brent Tate said he felt shaken for 10 minutes after this tackle by Josh Reynolds and Beau Scott.

"I didn't know where I was. At the end of the day, we're trying to stamp this type of thing out. I haven't seen it, I just felt it. I was pretty shaken up by it all because I was in a position where I had no control of where I was going."

Tate remains one of the game's few straight shooters and said nobody else in rugby league needs to be lying in a hospital bed because of a dangerous lifting tackle.

"We want that out of our game. We can't have it in our game. It's too dangerous. It's got to stop," Tate said.

"The NRL has to get serious about this and start cracking down, because we've already had an unfortunate incident. What are we going to do? Are we going to be sitting beside somebody else's bed? Is that the next time we're going to crack down on it? I don't know."

Queensland lock Corey Parker was one of the players that rushed in to help Tate and said he was worried for his safety after the tackle.

  • It noted QLD set up several tackles, if they be remotely called that, which were obviously rehearsed tactics. Where three or more QLD players lifted the NSW player, carried them and then threw or dumped them. Disgusting dirty play.
Bring back tackles to be "below the waist" only !
Cameron Smith has been the dirtiest player in tackes for many years. You will recall when the the Storm started using a wrestling coach !

    • Aw come off it pathetic Pete. Two or three lifting a player off the ground & carrying them has happened for years - dumping/throwing them, sorry but get your eyes tested. This is league & so you will often end up on the ground but there was no way any NSW player was recklessly thrown so as to end up on their head. Perhaps you missed Reynold's tackle altogether? Smith a dirty player? Try girly Gal the whinger who is always there for the face massage & elbow in the tackle but quick to chew the ref's ear if he thinks he has been infringed.

    • Reckless, dangerous and millimetres away from serious injury.
It appears that the NRL (and many fans) only care about foul play when a player is crippled, maimed or seriously hurt.
      Shame on you.

  • If the referees had any courage, then they would be sending off more players for that type of tackle. But why have they lost that?

A generation ago in rugby league a head-high tackle or punches thrown were part and parcel, but spear tackles were an automatic send off. Why has the most dangerous act become no more than a misplaced swinging arm?

Have the powers that be become so supplicant to media interests of keeping 13 vs 13 on the field for the pursuit of ratings?

The referees should be reminded that they have the ultimate power on the field under the laws of the game, and that the send off law is available.

Personally, I would rather see my team lose than for them to retain 13 on the field after injuring an opposition player due to a spear tackle. It would be very hollow to win those circumstances.

    • Spear tackle? You either didn't see the tackle or know absolutely zilch about contact sport. Neither defender had any intent at all to flip him. Even the one-eyed, Wally Lewis conceded that.

Caxton Street was once so hostile for anyone from NSW that police banned the Blues team bus from driving down the road on the way to Suncorp Stadium, but with the Maroons domination it is more like a carnival atmosphere before State of Origin these days. Andrew Johns, arguably NSW's greatest player, fronted a function at the Caxton Hotel, while former Blues stalwart Nathan Hindmarsh paraded outside the once notorious establishment with a sign strapped to his bare torso that read: "Qld sux". Then there was this group of Queensland fans, posted on Instagram by Blues captain Paul Gallen's Cronulla team-mate Chris Heighington, embracing Gallen's jibe about those born north of Tweed Heads having "two heads".
