The pair re-signed to kick off a host of contract announcements set to take place in the coming weeks as the Brumbies gear up for a Super Rugby finals tilt.

Mayhew has inked a new one-year deal while Leulua'iali'i-Makin will remain a part of the club he grew up supporting until the end of 2019.

The Brumbies are working to re-sign the bulk of their squad after the ARU lifted a contract ban a few weeks ago.

New coach Dan McKellar is starting to mould his squad for next season while there is also potential for the club to add players from whichever team the ARU decides to axe from the competition.

The Brumbies were spared from the uncertainty when the ARU took them off the chopping block, and now Leulua'iali'i-Makin says the young squad is shaping as a team to watch.

"Everyone has just bought in so much this year with all the new players," Leulua'iali'i-Makin said.

"There's a mix of new players and a couple that have been around now. It's exciting to see all the potential that we have, and it's a really good feel, which is what I like."

The Brumbies have been the shining light in a dark year for Australian rugby, but many believe they are only an outside chance of making any real headway in the Super Rugby finals.

But Leulua'iali'i-Makin is intent on proving the critics wrong and capping off the first year of the Brumbies' rebuild in the best possible fashion - with a Super Rugby title.

"We've always had that one goal, and that was to win the trophy at the end of the year," Makin said.

"Obviously a lot of people wrote us off at the start of the year because a lot of our key long-time players that we had at the club left.

"There was a lot of fresh blood and young boys coming into the team, where it was quite new for us. It's a credit to all the boys just buying in every week, just training and pushing each other as hard as we can, and proving the critics wrong."

Mayhew joined the Brumbies this season from the Auckland Blues and says his new puppy is evidence that he is well and truly settled into life in Canberra.

The only reason the 28-year-old Wallabies hopeful signed a one-year deal is because it keeps him from getting complacent as he nears the end of his career.

"I like the idea of just testing myself and not locking down too early and seeing how things unfold. It just keeps me on edge and makes me play better," Mayhew said.

"It's good to always know what you're doing for the next year. I've really enjoyed my time here and obviously I was pretty keen to stay on.

"We've got a really good core group of guys. Everyone gets along really well, we work hard for each other. If you have a team of players that all put in maximal effort, then you'll start to see results. I think that's what we're seeing a bit at the moment.

"We probably didn't have as many big names as the other teams but we've got a team of hard workers and it's showing in our defence and that kind of thing. We're definitely aware that you've got to make it yourself."

The Brumbies have two regular season games remaining, starting against the Queensland Reds on July 7, before they launch a finals raid next month.
