French-fried Wallabies back recipe for success

LONDON: It was past midnight in Paris and Berrick Barnes was picking over the remains of Australia's wretched performance against France less than two hours earlier.

Freshly showered and on his way to the post-match function, he was the only player left in the media zone. He had canvassed with reporters the scrum, the breakdown and the likely gleeful reaction in England, where the Wallabies were headed in just a few hours' time.

As he was ushered away for a feed and bed, Barnes offered one more take on the problems crippling the Wallabies' fortunes: ''We've got to find some tries somewhere, too.''

Tries, attack. Cornerstones of the Wallabies' brand two years ago and the enduring yardstick by which performance in the gold jersey is still measured today. Last Saturday, Australia were held try-less for the second Test in a row, this time by a French side that sucked the momentum and spirit from the Wallabies' attack.

Fiji might have lost to England by a larger margin than Australia to France but they managed to score two tries to England's seven in the course of the 40-point flogging.

Barnes, a seasoned spring tourist, knows England will be riding high on that victory, brimming with confidence in their back line and intent within the pack on exploiting Australia's scrummaging vulnerabilities at Twickenham this weekend.

''They'll be puffing their chests out, they had a good win, and we're not going to hide anything with the scrum, there'll be a heap of press around things like that, there'll be hoopla,'' he said. ''We've just got to go back to the drawing board and lick our wounds.''

Digby Ioane's anticipated return will inject much-needed experience, pace and skill into the back line. Barnes's continued recovery from a small neck injury will also force Deans into some tough decisions around fullback and centre.

''Robbie's going to have to make some calls, we've got some guys coming back from injury next week, and he'll have some headaches there, but we've just got to be up for it as a whole squad,'' Barnes said.

As part of reinvigorating the Wallabies' attack, coaching staff will pay extra attention to the breakdown in the lead-up to Saturday. Turnovers stymied Australia's forward thrust, with both Barnes and coach Robbie Deans admitting the French completely overwhelmed Australia at the contact area.

''We got a bit of [punch-through] in the second half, the trouble is our breakdown work let us down,'' Barnes said. ''We either weren't knocking them over or cleaning them out or we were just getting blown off it ourselves, and they attacked it harder than what we thought they would.''

David Pocock will be available for selection in the starting line-up, leaving Deans with a dilemma about to what to do with Michael Hooper, who has been playing superbly in Pocock's absence.

But after France's domination on Saturday it is hard to imagine how selectors could leave out one of the world's premier breakdown technicians in Pocock.

''It's great to have someone of his capability back,'' Deans said. ''We can make decisions around who plays when and where down the track but it's certainly good to have, at this stage of the year, 'Poey' coming back fresh. I don't think returning will be an issue for him, he's so conscientious in the way he prepares.''

Second-rower Sitaleki Timani and prop Ben Alexander will also be fit to start. Deans said he would consider starting all of them.

Senior players likened the match against France to the Wallabies' 22-0 loss to the All Blacks in the second Bledisloe Test at Eden Park. ''They were so effective in the initial collision that blokes felt the need to go in and support that, and that would compromise the next event,'' Deans said. ''It became the law of diminishing returns; you get into a downward cascade. There were moments of momentum but we didn't capitalise on them, and obviously the French were very efficient with their moments and turned the scoreboard over.''

The Wallabies will settle into their digs in pretty, autumnal Kensington while England plot their visitors' demise. Captain Chris Robshaw talked tough in the wake of their 40-point rout of Fiji, calling on the side to come up with a faster start and better execution. Deans knows England coach Stuart Lancaster will be salivating.

''They'll come into this encounter with a lot of confidence, and they will have seen in this encounter what the French were able to do with us, [and it] will have excited them,'' he said. ''This is Test rugby, you've quite simply got to meet, match and then ultimately overcome. Whether it be the set piece or whether it be in the continuous play. We've made some headway and then slipped back a notch.''
