Full steam ahead again for Timani

FLORENCE: Victory over England was not just a milestone for a brow-beaten Wallabies side or an under-pressure coach.

It also marked the first 80-minute Test performances this year from Sitaleki Timani and Wycliff Palu, two key forwards with game-changing potential.

The towering Waratahs put in blistering performances against England at Twickenham, personifying the Wallabies' rediscovered fighting spirit with crunching tackles, ploughing runs and rare offload skills.

No. 8 Palu struggled to remember the last time he made it through 80 minutes in a Test. ''I think I was playing under-15s and it was 35-minute halves,'' he joked.

Timani, delivering on his huge potential after a productive, if shortened, season with the Waratahs and more time with the Wallabies, said he had no idea he would make it to the full-time bell.

''I was surprised myself that I lasted that long on the field but I think if you're there you just have to put in your best performance,'' he said.

They want to lift their games again, this time against Italy, who appear to be playing a more expansive style but sacrificing none of their set-piece ferocity.

''We were watching the footage [of the All Blacks] and I think every scrum [Italy] try to get a penalty out of it and stay there as long as they can,'' Timani said. ''I think for us we need to stay there as long as we can and try to get our ball out before we break up.''

Palu and Timani also share a notoriously tough approach to self assessment. While the 80,000-odd England fans on the stands could not miss Timani running head and shoulders above everyone else down the field on Saturday in London, the lock gave himself a stern talking-to at half-time.

''I was thinking to myself I needed to step up and do something because I think everyone [else] stepped up in the first 40 [minutes],'' he said of his first Test performance in three weeks.

''I think I went a bit better in the second half … more the little things, like clean-outs and supporting the team, and defence as well, and I tried to get my hand on the ball.''

No one missed that. And it's likely to continue.
