It has also been revealed that Kimlin played through pain in the Super Rugby semi final and final despite knowing he would need post-season surgery.

Kimlin was one of the Brumbies' stand out performers as they fell just short of the Super Rugby title when they lost to the Waikato Chiefs 27-22 last Saturday night.

He wore a protective cast on his thumb at training and in the lead up to the final against the Chiefs, but was determined to play on to help the Brumbies chase a championship.

Kimlin is out of action for six weeks.

Kimlin has played his last game for the Brumbies for the immediate future after signing a one-year deal in France.

It's unclear how his broken thumb will affect his Wallabies prospects and his departure date to join Grenoble.

Kimlin had hoped to play in the Rugby Championship and then earn a spot on the Wallabies' end of year spring tour of Europe before linking with Grenoble.

He has an option of playing two seasons in France, but the chance to chase selection for the World Cup in 2015 and another crack at a Super Rugby title could lure Kimlin back to Canberra.

Wallabies hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau has also been ruled out with Queensland Reds hooker Albert Anae called into the Wallabies training camp in Sydney.

"It's always disappointing to lose players through injury but in Tatafu's case we don't expect him to be out long and he will still play a large part in our upcoming campaign," Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie said.

"What his injury has done though is open the door for Albert to take up an opportunity.

"Albert is still young for a front-rower but his versatility is a real asset, while he also possesses the appropriate size and strength to adapt positively to the new scrum laws.

"You're always searching for players with a lot of potential and Albert is a guy who will learn plenty from being part of the national environment."

The Wallabies will announce their final 30-man squad at the end of the training camp on Friday.
