The Wallabies played Uruguay in Birmingham on Sunday (AEST) in the second match of their World Cup campaign before moving to London for matches against England and Wales.

The players have been either playing or at intensive training camps since August as they aim to become World Cup champions.

But instead of shutting the players off from their partners and children, Cheika wants to keep the squad grounded by giving them a chance to escape from rugby.

"It's just balance. You are away for a long time, so it is just having a normal life," Cheika said.

"There has been a really good atmosphere around the team. You can tell by the way everyone is holding themselves, we are just feeling good about the work we are doing.

"We feel like we are preparing well, so it allows you to be normal, and have a normal life without expectation and anxiety that we aren't doing the work."

The Australian cricket team was dragged into a WAGS – wives and girlfriends – debate when there were accusations they were to blame for the Ashes demise.

But the ARU has no set policy and Cheika is more focused on a common-sense approach with his 31-man squad.

The Wallabies have been in camp since early July, have travelled to Argentina, New Zealand, the United States and now the United Kingdom.

If they make it through to the end of the World Cup, they will have spent almost four months on the road.

Some players met their partners in Bath last week and took time away from rugby on their days off from training.

Lock Dean Mumm left Wallabies camp on Friday morning to go to London for the birth of his son, just hours after he was named Australia's Test captain.

Mumm was riding high when he returned and led the Wallabies into battle against Uruguay in Birmingham.

"Getting the work and done and there is a good atmosphere in the team, so partners come … my wife is here for a couple of days," Cheika said.

"It gives you a break and then you are back into it [the next day]."

Wallabies veteran Matt Giteau left Australian rugby in 2011 to move his career to the south of France.

The French competition has less travel demands and players often move abroad to have a better rugby-life balance to spend time with their families.

Giteau now has two sons, Levi and Kai, who have changed his perspective on rugby.

The ARU's decision to change its eligibility rules earlier this year opened the door for Giteau to make a Test comeback.

But the flipside to returning to the Wallabies jersey was going for the longest period without seeing his boys.

"It's tough, because I hadn't experienced that [before I had kids]," Giteau said.

"The longest I'd gone had been a week without the kids. Initially it was tough, but then once you get into this World Cup preparation, that's where my focus is.

"It's such a short tournament, it's over quickly and I think everyone, not just myself, makes sacrifices throughout the campaign.

"That's how I see it, it's a short tournament, you make sacrifices and hopefully you get the rewards."
