An open and honest Phipps vehemently defended the Wallabies' culture and said players had no issue working with women after former team business manager Di Patston broke her silence this week to say she felt bullied when lewd messages about her were sent by Beale.

Phipps was forced to answer questions on sexism and the role of women in sport at the Wallabies' first press conference in London.

Phipps hopes the Wallabies can rebuild respect and inject enthusiasm back into Australian rugby on their five-game tour of Europe as they attempt to put off-field incidents behind them.

Beale has been fined $45,000 after being found guilty at a code of conduct hearing in Sydney, but avoided suspension and could join the Wallabies on their spring tour.

"We're all about second chances, [Beale] is the first one to say he made a mistake and what he did was not right in any way," Phipps said.

"But I think he deserves a chance, who doesn't deserve a chance? A lot of fans out there probably aren't happy at the moment, but time heals.

"I don't hesitate in saying I'd love to have [Beale] around, he's a great bloke and he's been dragged through the mud a bit in the last few months. But I just want us to put it all behind us.

"…I have noticed a lot people are commenting on harassment in the work place … we're fully supportive of women in sport and always will be.

"I find it funny that gender is always brought into it, if they're good enough to do the job [regardless of gender] they should be there."

Patston was at the centre of an ARU investigation into Beale's conduct and said: "I'm alive but there are times I haven't wanted to be here."

Asked if Patston was up to the job as Wallabies team business manager, Phipps said: "I'm not sure, there were a lot of things in the background and I wouldn't know what's gone on behind the scenes."

Both Phipps and assistant coach Nathan Grey voiced their support of Beale in the build up to the clash against the Barbarians at Twickenham on Sunday morning Australian time.

Beale is back training in Australia and Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has said the troubled star won't be called on to the spring tour of Europe unless necessary.

The ARU will reopen negotiations with Beale to keep him in Australian rugby beyond the end of the year, but Grey warned there's a "fluid market" with overseas options or switching codes to the NRL.

"[Beale] could possibly [join the tour] once he gets his conditioning back … if he's available and ready to go we'll consider him," Grey said.

"Kurtley is great to coach and can be good for a team … I'm lucky enough to be an assistant at the Wallabies and I want the best 30 rugby players in Australia. If he's one of those, I want him on board."

The Wallabies have suffered a turbulent 18 months, churning through coaches Robbie Deans and Ewen McKenzie before appointing Cheika last week. On top of that they have used four different captains since the British and Irish Lions series last year.

Phipps conceded the off-field drama and "painful" last-minute losses had taken a mental toll.

"I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a distraction, you've only got to look on Twitter and see something pop every day with a new article about something," Phipps said.

"That does affect the boys a little bit, but at the end of the day we're world-class players and we should be getting tighter as a group and putting that behind us.

"Hopefully we can play well enough to get articles written about how we're playing and get that enthusiasm back for Australian rugby.

"It's been an interesting few months … you can't really sum it up in words. I'd love it to be behind us, I think that would be the best thing for KB and the group."

Despite the distractions, Phipps said his love of playing for Australia has never wavered.

"You'll never lose that pure joy of representing your country, it was more the off-field stuff that was a dampener in the group. You've just got to keep playing."
