NSW Police are investigating the discovery of a listening device found in a New Zealand team meeting room at the Intercontinental Hotel in Double Bay last week. It is unknown who planted the bug and if the All Blacks were the target, but one theory is that it may have been placed by a sophisticated gambling outfit.

The device was discovered last Monday morning, five days before police were made aware of the bug through the media. That was on the morning of the first Bledisloe Cup match at ANZ stadium, won 42-8 by the All Blacks.

New Zealand Rugby said they delayed reporting the incident to police until CEO Steve Tew returned from the Rio Olympics.

Cheika was shocked by news of the bug and didn't believe anything could be gained by punters listening into private team discussions.

"I don't know how people could be even that interested to do something like that. I don't understand what type of gain you're going to get from it anyway because the result's so contested, it's stupid really," Cheika said.

"Gambling's a terrible thing if you ask me in general. I'm not into it at all.

"Now the police are occupied doing something like that when they should be catching real criminals. It's not something we're going to worry about. If people want to do that stuff, that's their problem.

"I've got to deal with making sure the team plays good footy."

The bugging incident doesn't appear to have been discussed openly in Wallabies circles, with David Pocock admitting he hadn't heard of the incident until asked about it on Tuesday morning.

"Honestly this is the first I've heard of it so I don't feel I can comment in terms of rugby and betting," Pocock said.

"As a human, as a citizen, there is a whole lot of privacy issues there and that's not great at all, that's certainly not what we want.

"I'm sure it'll be dealt with and hopefully looked into further.

"That's not for players I don't think. We'll leave that to the big bosses to talk about."

The Wallabies fly to New Zealand on Wednesday night and clash with the All Blacks on Saturday in Wellington, where Australia have not won a Test in 16 years.

Perhaps more imposing is the All Blacks' recent record on home soil, which stands at 40 consecutive wins.

Australia must win to keep their Bledisloe Cup hopes alive. At the very least they must produce a more competitive effort than last weekend.

"I don't know how you can be happy after a performance like that," Pocock said.

"There's no easy way round that. You've got to be pretty honest with where we fell short, have a good look at that and then train well.

"We certainly enjoy working hard, working alongside each other and we'll be doing that this week and preparing as best we can.

"They're the No.1 team for a reason and that's the challenge for us to improve our whole game. New Zealand's in a really strong position in terms of their depth and you see that in their Super Rugby teams.

"There are no surprises they've kicked on from last year on the back of the World Cup."
