The Wallabies face a massive challenge against England at Twickenham this week in a preview of a World Cup showdown between the nations next year.

Tensions will be running high as Australia attempt to avoid their worst spring tour of Europe statistics since 2005 having won just one Test so far.

Cheika was only appointed as Wallabies coach less than a month ago and had just three days to prepare for the four-Test trip.

But he said the team had to be prepared to "wear the eggs" as they go through a transformation to the way he wants the Wallabies to play.

"Both play-wise and cultural, it just takes a bit of time … we're going to have to work hard in the Super Rugby period in what we deliver to players and how we get that across," Cheika said. "We've got to keep building. I think everyone will get behind the team and play a certain way [the fans] want us to play. Sometimes you've got to have patience and belief.

"Belief that we can be successful … you've got to believe what you do and don't react to everything. Eventually people respect that. I believe in the team we have for the team, that gives me confidence. I've been where people are throwing eggs before, you've just got to hold your nerve and eventually that comes out."

The Wallabies have lost five of their past six Tests and have only beaten Wales in Europe. But the margin between triumph and defeat is tight, with the Wallabies beating Wales by five points and losing to France and Ireland by three points.

The latest loss was to Ireland 26-23 and the Wallabies showed some attacking brilliance in the first half to score three sensational tries. But a woeful start – they let in 17 points in the first 15 minutes – had the Wallabies on the back foot and when they edged in front after half-time they didn't have the energy to deliver a killer blow.

Ireland scored its two tries from a cross-field kick and an 85-metre runaway after an intercept, with the defence showing strong signs of improvement.

England have also been struggling, losing five Tests in a row before beating Samoa 28-9 in preparation for the clash against Australia.

The Wallabies will play England at Twickenham in the World Cup next year, with the demand for tickets so high the 82,000-seat venue could have been sold out eight times. The popularity of the pool fixture was higher than that of the World Cup final.

The Wallabies are expecting England to try to take Israel Folau out of the game by kicking the ball away from the superstar fullback.

"They're trying to kick to Foley, but we'll need the guys to move around at the back so they can't pick who's going to be on what side. It's not if or but, it's guaranteed. They'll put kicks up," Cheika said.

Kurtley Beale also made his comeback and almost scored with his first touch while Matt Toomua was strong in his return and Quade Cooper and Will Genia continue to push for selection.

"It was a proud moment," Beale said of his return. "I know I've been working really hard to get where I am and I'm very grateful that I got the opportunity to go out there [again]."

Cheika said he would have to be "creative" with his preparation during the Super Rugby season. The Super Rugby championship-winning mentor will return to the NSW Waratahs coaching job when he returns to Australia next week as he juggles both roles.

The Waratahs have already started pre-season training and Cheika took the Wallabies job after Ewen McKenzie quit last month on the condition he could continue to lead NSW.

"If I'm not holding my nerve then no one's going to," Cheika said. "I'm disappointed because no one wants to win more than me. We've got to develop during Super Rugby and not just turn up and hope it's happening. I hope at least people see we're having a go. Yes it hurts, but sometimes you've got to ride that."

Cheika said the time was fast approaching where he would invest in certain playmakers who can take Australia to the World Cup.

Nick Phipps and Bernard Foley have been strong, despite some miscommunication against Ireland, and Genia and Cooper have combined well from the bench.
