The Brumbies and Godwin's manager have started initial talks about his future beyond the end of 2018 in the hope they can strike a deal to keep him in Australian rugby despite interest from overseas clubs.

But Godwin has buried any thoughts about a new contract to make sure his concentration is purely performance after a broken hand and knee injury prematurely ended his first Super Rugby season in Canberra.

Godwin played 11 games for the Brumbies this year, but a cruel knee injury ruined his hopes of playing in the finals for the first time in his six-season career.

It also affected his chances of earning his second Test cap in the Rugby Championship or on the spring tour, with Kurtley Beale returning to Australia to cement his place in the Wallabies' No. 12 jersey.

"It wasn't to be with the Wallabies this year, it was obviously a goal of mine but I didn't get there. So I have to go back to the drawing board," Godwin said.

"Hopefully I can improve my game and that can take me a bit closer next year. I missed a fair chunk of game time so that didn't help.

"You can't control the injuries I got this year. So for me it's about getting a good strong pre-season and pushing my case to be a starter [for the Brumbies] first."

New Brumbies coach Dan McKellar will take the reins for the first time next year, but also has the task of long-term planning for his playing roster.

Fringe Wallabies will attract high interest from European and Japanese clubs and are prepared to pay top dollar to poach players before the World Cup in 2019.

Godwin is on the radar of overseas clubs but at just 25 years old, he will be a valuable asset to Australian rugby in the coming years and is understood to be keen to keep working with the Brumbies.

"For me, I've got a really good relationship with my agent so he deals with [contracts] on the side and I concentrate on performance. I enjoy being able to do that," Godwin said.

"I haven't really thought about it at the moment. I'm happy here at the Brumbies and we'll see what happens in the future."

The Brumbies inside backs will be bolstered by the return of Christian Lealiifano and a fully fit Godwin next year, but young gun Jordan Jackson-Hope is keen to push the Wallabies duo.

Jackson-Hope's development was stunted when he had ankle surgery to repair a damaged ligament and is still easing his way back into full training.

"The surgeon got in there and found the ligament had folded back in itself, so they had to get in and put some wires in the ankle," Jackson-Hope said.

"I'm getting through the running OK, it's just about getting back into contact and putting some force through it.

"I'm picking up a lot of stuff off [Godwin], it's a really competitive environment and that's only going to be good for us."
