Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham met with Christian Lealiifano on Sunday to discuss the co-captain's potential comeback against the Queensland Reds and what role he will play this season.

Lealiifano played Canberra club rugby on Saturday and could come into selection contention for a remarkable return to professional rugby just 11 months after being diagnosed with leukaemia.

The 29-year-old's presence will be a massive boost for the Brumbies even if he doesn't play, while Larkham is also preparing to throw Scott Sio and Tomas Cubelli back into Super Rugby action.

Sio has played just four games this year after battling hamstring and knee problems, while Cubelli hasn't played at all after injuring his knee in a pre-season match.

Both are expected to play against the Reds in Brisbane as the Brumbies search for momentum before a home quarter final on July 21.

"It's the first time in my time as a coach here that we've got to this stage of the season in this position with a healthy squad like this," Larkham said.

"Having all of your players available for selection is massive. To have the experience of Christian, Tomas and Scotty Sio is a massive boost.

"It gives you confidence as a coach but from a players' point of view, they'll take a lot out of that as well."

The Brumbies returned to training on Sunday to start preparations for the clash against the Reds, but Wallabies winger Henry Speight's week was delayed by his sister's wedding in Fiji.

Speight is expected to be fit despite damaging his hamstring while playing for the Wallabies in the mid-year Test series.

The Brumbies have already secured Australia's guaranteed play-off spot but beating the Reds and the Waikato Chiefs in the last two games of the regular season will give them much-needed confidence.

They can also finish in third spot on the overall table, but regardless of their position they are set to play either the Wellington Hurricanes or Waikato Chiefs in the opening week of the finals.

Lealiifano's fate will be decided at training after he made a surprise comeback in Singapore two weeks ago and again for Tuggeranong's fourth-grade side on Saturday.

Larkham was on the sideline for the Tuggeranong match, where Lealiifano played 55 minutes and showed he still has the skill to be a Super Rugby playmaker.

"In watching those two games ... I think his skill-set is where it needs and he'll take a lot of confidence out of that," Larkham said.

"But there are many other aspects to the make up for a rugby player and for Christian as well so we will wait and see on that one."

Veteran prop Ben Alexander will become the most-capped player in Brumbies history if he's picked to play against the Reds.

The club is also on the verge of finalising several contracts to keep the bulk of the squad together, but Larkham will leave the Brumbies at the end of the season to become a full-time Wallabies assistant.

The challenge they face against the Reds is trying to recapture the momentum and attacking rugby that saved their season two months ago.

The Brumbies lost four games in a row in the middle of the season, but recovered to win three consecutive games before the mid-year bye.

"The guys who went to Singapore bonded really well and guys are coming in after a week off," Larkham said.

"They should all be ready to go and energetic. Finishing third or fourth isn't our concern. It's about preparation and to make sure we get that right for the quarter final."
