But interim chief executive Phil Thomson has assured fans any move for financial stability will not affect the Brumbies being based in Canberra or their links to the city.

Thomson is working with the Brumbies board and the Australian Rugby Union to look at a wide range of options available to help the Brumbies become a long-term sustainable franchise.

The club will announce another financial loss at the end of the year, though the new Super Rugby television rights deals has limited the impact on their bank balance.

The Brumbies are also searching for a full-time chief executive after Michael Jones accepted a payout earlier this year. But news of private equity options could cloud the recruitment process because the organisational structure could change.

Thomson said the Brumbies had to go into the process with an open mind after losing more than $1.6 million last year and preparing for another deficit this year.

"In the short term we're in a solid financial position but in the long term we need to work with the ARU about sustainability," Thomson said.

"That's not just us, that's all Super Rugby teams and Australian rugby in general. We're solid, but we can't keep going down the same trend we've been on and losing money year after year.

"We have to look at ways of ensuring we've got enough money and the right structures in place to make sure the organisation is sustainable and remains in Canberra."

The Brumbies have all but whittled away the money from the $11.375 million sale of their former Griffith headquarters after moving to a new base at the University of Canberra.

The Melbourne Rebels are privately owned, while the ARU has taken control of the struggling Western Force.

The Otago Highlanders, the team that knocked the Brumbies out of title contention this year, entered into a private ownership model this year.

The ARU is looking at centralising operations of its Super Rugby teams to streamline staffing numbers and prevent clubs from doubling up.

But there has been resistance in the past and it's unlikely all teams would commit to a structure.

Thomson reiterated that the Brumbies were safe in Canberra and their financial situation was not as dire as the Force's, which led to the Perth-based club selling its intellectual property.

"The Brumbies aren't going anywhere. But we have to act now to make sure there is the right financial model in place," Thomson said.

"The brand will stay in Canberra, that is for sure. The keys aren't ready to be handed in. The Brumbies have never been a multi-million dollar operation, but we've survived.

"The best way to put that is 'solid'. We're a viable business and we've got good sponsors and we've got good government support.

"We're looking more at a unified model in relation to how we can work better right across Australian rugby.

"The ARU are not adverse to bringing private equity into rugby and they've proven that with the Melbourne Rebels, so I certainly think it's something we should be exploring as an option moving forward.

"There are plenty of models you can use, it just depends on the parties involved and how much they want to invest ... we need to look at all options."

The Brumbies are still working with coach Stephen Larkham to try to secure his future.

Larkham is off-contract at the end of the year and is yet to decide on whether he will return to the Brumbies or take up a full-time role as a Wallabies assistant coach.

The Brumbies board is also implementing back-room changes to have a more professional board of directors.
