The Brumbies announced a $14,361 profit at the Super Rugby club's annual general meeting at the University of Canberra on Wednesday night.

It's the first time in six years the Brumbies have turned a profit and, while small, it's a welcome relief after losing more than $3 million in the past three seasons.

The massive turnaround comes after the Brumbies lost $864,093 last year, largely due to the fact the club had to pay legal costs and settled on a payout to former chief executive Michael Jones.

They also had to find a way to combat declining gate, corporate hospitality and ARU grant revenue as new boss Michael Thomson tightened the belt.

Thomson has provided a steady hand to help ease tensions and find financial stability, unveiling Land Rover on Wednesday as a returning corporate partner for the next two seasons.

"Part of the scramble of running a rugby club is getting to the end of a season and then thinking about the next year about how you can get money in to be sustainable," Thomson said.

"To have Land Rover back for another two years, it just gives a bit more of a stable platform going forward."

Brumbies match-day revenue dropped from $1.878 million in 2016 to $1.328 million this year, with crowd numbers being hit by Australian rugby's off-field chaos.

Just 9771 watched the Brumbies play against the Wellington Hurricanes in a Super Rugby quarter final and the code struggled to recover from Rugby Australia's woeful handling of axing the Western Force.

RA cut more than $700,000 out of its grants to the club, including a $272,000 cut to community rugby, but the Brumbies absorbed the cost rather than passing it on to grassroots clubs.

Match-day expenses and administration expenses dropped by a combined almost $1 million, with the administration expenses largely accounted for by the payout to Jones last year.

Former coach Stephen Larkham also trimmed almost $70,000 out of his team budget, helping the Brumbies turn a profit for just the fourth time since 2003 and the only Australian team to be in the black.

"We're not going to throw a big Christmas party off the back of [the profit], and we're hoping to increase it next year," said outgoing chairman Robert Kennedy.

"Attendances and viewership of rugby in the southern hemisphere is declining and the Australian rugby brand didn't help us this year.

"But it's a credit to Michael Thomson, it was really good management of all of that. Financially I'd say it's not without its challenges ... there are still massive challenges around sponsorship and the game.

"It's not Brumbies specific. We're looking for some stability at the top and hopefully it filters down."
