Alexander is set to finalise a one-year contract extension on Friday, joining a growing list of Brumbies committing their futures to a changing of the guard with incoming coach Dan McKellar.

Prop Alexander is on track to pass Smith as the most capped player in Brumbies history if he recovers from a knee injury in time to play against the Queensland Reds on July 7.

A twist of rugby fate could see Alexander square off against Smith in Brisbane when Super Rugby resumes and the Brumbies begin their finals charge.

Smith, a Brumbies, Wallabies and now Reds stalwart, is revered as the greatest player in ACT history after a decorated career in the capital.

But he was glowing in his admiration of Alexander's impending achievement, even if it means surrendering his 142-game record.

"To be playing in the front row for so many years and pass players like Bill Young shows how durable and well received Benny A is at the Brumbies," Smith said.

"To be selected in that many games and play in Canberra for so long ... I wish him all the best and hopefully he has a lot more games for the Brumbies as well.

"Benny has been a great stalwart for a number of years and a leader. I'm absolutely pleased and excited for him to pass the mark."

It can be revealed Alexander will extend his career for at least another season after agreeing to terms to stay with the Brumbies.

The 32-year-old has missed only a handful of games since making his debut in 2008, earning 72 caps for Australia before his international career stalled in 2014.

Alexander was set to pass Smith's mark last month, but injured his knee at training before the clash against the Melbourne Rebels.

But a comeback against the Reds for a milestone moment will be made even sweeter after securing a new contract.

Alexander's knee cap popped out at training but he could be back on the field when the Brumbies return to work on Friday after a four-week mid-season break.

The Brumbies smashed the Reds 43-10 at Canberra Stadium in April and the club has already secured its place in the play-offs for a fifth consecutive season.

However, Smith and former Brumbies skipper Stephen Moore could stand in the way as a pre-finals roadblock in Brisbane.

Smith turned down an approach to join the Brumbies this season to instead move his family to Brisbane.

The 36-year-old champion flanker is still regarded as Brumbies royalty and joked about losing his record to Alexander.

"There's never any bitterness to anyone at the Brumbies, it's a great community in Canberra and [the surrounding regions]," Smith said.

"Records are meant to be broken and for Benny A to do it, he's been a great servant of the game and I'm really pleased for him.

"Players who get on and pass 30 years [old], they have their own little secrets when they continue to play. Longevity is a big thing when you pass 30, you tend to be smarter in the way you do things."

The Brumbies will host a home final on July 21, with tickets likely to be available to the general public on Monday.
