ACT Brumbies prop Alaalatoa is fighting to earn his first Test cap in Australia's Bledisloe Cup clash against the All Blacks in Sydney on Saturday night.

The Wallabies have started a mission to transfer Alaalatoa from Super Rugby loosehead prop into a tighthead technician ready for international battle.

But the secret weapon he has up his sleeve for a clash against New Zealand is a brother who has been entrenched in the Canterbury Crusaders' set-up for the past 12 months.

Crusaders Wyatt Crockett, Owen Franks and Joe Moody are all in the New Zealand squad for the Rugby Championships and spent the Super Rugby season playing alongside Mike Alaalatoa.

The only problem is Mike has respected trans-Tasman secrets. For now.

"He better not consider himself a New Zealander and I told him he shouldn't be backing them," Alaalatoa said.

"He's trained alongside all of those guys so he does know about their play. But in terms of going to Test footy, it's a whole different story.

"I haven't asked him for tips to be honest, whenever I chat to him it's just about how he's going. Most of the time's it's not about footy because most of our lives is taken up by rugby."

The Wallabies have been training on the Central Coast for the past two weeks in preparation for Rugby Championship and Bledisloe Cup redemption.

Alaalatoa was used by the Brumbies mainly as a second-half wrecking ball coming on to replace childhood friend Scott Sio.

But the Wallabies have been working behind the scenes to make him the anchor of the scrum in the technical tighthead position.

He was part of the Wallabies squad for the three Test series against England in June, but coach Michael Cheika opted not to use him in any of the matches.

The former Australian under-20s representative may get his opportunity against New Zealand in a Test the Wallabies are desperate to win after their three-nil loss to England.

"It's been tough but it's getting exciting now as the game gets closer," Alaalatoa said.

"In the camp [during the England Tests] I was just learning the ropes a little bit and experiencing it all.

"But I feel a lot more comfortable now and I know what to expect so I'm probably less nervous and more focused on knowing my job and what I need to do."

Alaalatoa played 16 games for the Brumbies during the Super Rugby season and his 499 minutes were more than double his workload from his previous two seasons.

Shifting to the opposite side of the scrum could open the door for Alaalatoa to play alongside Sio for the first time after growing up together in Sydney.

Their dads played for Samoa at the 1991 World Cup and 22-year-old Alaalatoa declared he's ready to take his Wallabies chance if called on.

"I'm itching to get a crack and that's good. To think there's a possibility of playing is exciting, it will be a dream come true," he said.

"But you've got to wait and see what the squad is. I've been watching the Bledisloe for as long as I can remember now so if I got my chance in that it would be awesome.

"All of the older guys have been helping me and the more I'm training the more confident I feel. We've got great leaders in the team that make young boys feel comfortable."

Brumbies Sio, Alaalatoa, Stephen Moore, Scott Fardy, David Pocock, Tevita Kuridrani and Matt Toomua are all pressing their claims for selection against the All Blacks.
