The Brumbies board is expected to meet this week to further discuss plans to permanently replace former chief executive Michael Jones and detail how the club will cope through the recruitment process.

Jones and the board agreed to part ways last week after an ugly off-field battle that led to some fractures in the organisation.

The Brumbies team got things back on track on the field, moving to the top of the Australian conference by beating the Pretoria Bulls on the weekend.

They have a chance to extend their lead when they play the Melbourne Rebels on Friday night as competition heats up for Australia's guaranteed finals berth.

But the back-room dealings are still being smoothed over, and it is believed the ARU is keen for Thomson, who leads the ARU's integrity unit, to take charge as a calming influence.

General manager of community rugby Craig Leseberg was appointed as the interim Brumbies boss by the board after chairman Robert Kennedy met with the club's senior executives last week.

But Thomson is one option available and has been floated as an external person to step in as the Brumbies also attempt to re-sign coach Stephen Larkham, plan for 2017 revenue and recruit and retain players.

Thomson was the team manager of the inaugural Brumbies in 1996 before moving to the Wallabies and then into an integrity manager role with the ARU.

The ARU's integrity unit was involved in the initial stages of the Brumbies and ARU's decision to commission a KPMG report into transactions at the clubs, which was the source of tension between Jones and stakeholders.

The process to find Jones' successor could take between three and six months while there is also the suggestion the ARU is looking to move towards a centralised Super Rugby model.

A centralised model, which was initially proposed three years ago and knocked back, would change the staff set-up at Brumbies headquarters.

Thomson is one of the most respected figures in ARU circles and is still based in Canberra despite his role with the integrity unit.

Several candidates are still rumoured to be in contention to replace Jones long term, including former Brumbies star Joe Roff and Australian Sports Commission participation general manager Michael Thomson.

The board is still trying to repair its relationship with the University of Canberra and Brumbies officials have met with the ACT government in the past week to rebuild their alliance.

Kennedy has also indicated there are likely to be governance and board room changes in the coming months to shift the focus to a professional board.

The current board is made up of elected members and board-appointed directors. Canberra rugby clubs hold significant power in the boardroom with 14 of a potential 23 votes.

An independent review of Canberra rugby union by Dr Michael Crawford in 2012 suggested club rugby was being "suffocated" by the Brumbies and that the two entities should be split up.

A move to do so was rejected, and it's understood that the clubs would resist any move to have them separated from the Brumbies or for the ARU to take over the Brumbies' intellectual property and day-to-day runnings.

Kennedy and Jones created a skills matrix last year for new board members, but it was put on hold until the behind-the-scenes drama was sorted out.

It's understood Kennedy is keen to push ahead with the skills matrix in the coming months and have it in place before the annual general meeting, where new directors are elected, at the end of the year.

Tuggeranong Vikings president John McGrath said he would back a move to a more professional board as long as it wasn't at the adverse expense of clubs in the board room.

"We wanted things explained to us, and we're very keen on a skills-matrix based board," McGrath said.

"We'd be opposed to be splitting away from the Brumbies ... I'd back changes to the board but I don't think it would be satisfactory if the board had the power to veto club nominations, that's my personal view."
