After a torrid month culminating in Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie quitting his post and star player Kurtley Beale being stood down for crude remarks to team staff member Di Patston, Brumbies captain Stephen Moore has committed to helping the rebuild.

The injured Wallabies skipper signed a one-year contract extension with the Brumbies and the ARU on Monday that will take him to 2016.

Having a key player with Moore's experience – boasting 131 Super Rugby caps and 92 Tests for the Wallabies – locked in after the World Cup, when there is generally an exodus for lucrative pastures overseas, is a feather in the cap for the ARU.

Moore did not completely rule out playing either in Europe or Japan when his contract expires, but he will be 33 at the end of his new deal.

"When I weighed it all up, it wasn't a difficult decision," Moore said.

"Having the injury this year, I've missed basically the whole Test season so it's probably freshened me up mentally to go for another couple of years.

"Hopefully I can come back from this injury and have two more good years with the Brumbies."

After playing his first five Super Rugby seasons with the Queensland Reds, Moore joined the Brumbies in 2009.

The 31-year-old was named to captain the Wallabies for the June Test series against France, but tore an anterior cruciate ligament in his knee in the first couple of minutes of the opening game.

Moore hopes to return for the Brumbies in the first month of next year's Super Rugby competition before turning his focus to the World Cup.

The new deal will put Moore on the brink of passing Nathan Sharpe as Australia's most-capped Super Rugby player.

Moore is also eight Tests shy of passing 100 appearances for his country, behind only George Gregan (139 Tests), Sharpe (119 Tests) and George Smith (111 Tests).

Moore said the prospect of leaving after next year's World Cup did not come into his thinking, but he did not begrudge players who had a sabbatical overseas.

"There's great opportunities overseas and I certainly wouldn't rule out doing that myself at some point," Moore said.

"It's just that at this point in my life and my career, I was pretty keen to keep playing for the Brumbies and hopefully the Wallabies for another couple of years.

"Rugby's a global game and the fact guys can play professionally overseas, there's a lot to be said for that."

Moore takes over a Brumbies team that has made the finals in the past two seasons.

After falling at the final hurdle last year, the Brumbies were eliminated by eventual champions NSW in the semi-finals last season.

"My goal as captain is to have a level of consistency, so every year we give ourselves an opportunity to win," Moore said.

"You look around that top-four area, that's where you want to be.

"If we can consistently strive to make that top four, then we'll give ourselves a good chance to win the comp."
