Brumbies duo Joseph Tomane and Matt Toomua are in rehabilitation mode after having knee surgeries that dented their hopes of playing for the Wallabies against England in June.

They are on track to be back on the field in the next month, but the Brumbies are prepared to go through the rest of the season without classy winger Henry Speight.

The Brumbies are just one point behind the NSW Waratahs in the Australian conference and need to win their remaining games to guarantee themselves a finals berth.

Toomua would have been a certainty in the Wallabies side after Kurtley Beale suffered an injury last weekend, while Tomane was the form winger in Australian rugby before he got injured a month ago.

Speight is still chasing his Rio Olympic Games ambitions despite a fracture above his eye ruling him out for more than two months and threatening to end his hopes of Australian sevens selection.

Speight has been cleared to return to contact training in two weeks, but he must wear headgear to protect the titanium mash that is screwed into the bone above his left eye.

The Fijian-born speedster will speak with Brumbies teammates Scott Fardy and David Pocock this week about what headgear would best protect his injury and the potential of having a headgear specially made to come down closer to his eye.

Speight will be given a chance to prove his Olympic worth in Australian sevens fixtures in June and July and if he's selected to go to Rio he won't play another Super Rugby game this year.

Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham is hopeful Tomane and Toomua will be back in June to potentially chase Test selection for the Wallabies or at least be ready to play against the Queensland Reds on July 1.

"We always knew we might not get Henry back this year even before he got injured," Larkham said.

"If he's not in the Rio team then of course we'll take him back in a heartbeat obviously. But at the moment he's focusing everything on trying to get to the Olympics and we support him with that."

The Brumbies outside back stocks have been hit by injuries, with Andrew Smith still recovering from a foot problem and Robbie Coleman racing to overcome a hamstring injury in time to play the Sunwolves.

The lack of wingers opened the door for rookie Jordan Jackson-Hope to make his debut two weeks ago, while Lausii Taliauli started in his first game since the Super Rugby semi-final last season.

The Brumbies are confident they have the depth to cover injuries for at least one more game before going on hiatus for the international window for Australia to play England in three Tests.

Toomua and Tomane were both invited to a Wallabies planning session last week despite their injuries, indicating that Test coach Michael Cheika believes they still have a role to play against England.

Wallabies spots will be up for grabs in the Brumbies' clash against the Sunwolves, with Christian Lealiifano poised to win back a spot in the Test back line and Tevita Kuridrani trying to fend off a challenge from Israel Folau and Samu Kerevi for the outside centre position.

Speight knows he faces massive challenge to trade his Wallabies hopes for a potential Olympic medal chance.

"The standard has been set by the boys that have been playing so we have to match up to them and go with it, or we'll drop out," Speight said.

"The guys who have been out injured have to rise up to a challenge. It's a good fight at the moment, I can't wait to rip in and and get out there. While there's a chance, I'll chase it. All I can do is do my best and I've got nothing to lose in those trial games in June, I've just got to try to make the most of it."
