But Moore and Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham insist the Canberra club doesn't need to prove a point for Australian rugby after a lopsided year of trans-Tasman contests.

The Brumbies will play the Otago Highlanders in a Super Rugby knockout match at Canberra Stadium.

The Brumbies have only lost two finals in the capital and the Highlanders have only won twice in Canberra in the competition's history.

But the glaring Australia-New Zealand results this year have led many to tip that the dangerous Dunedin-based side will continue a horror rivalry trend.

Australian teams have won just three of 25 matches against New Zealand opponents this year.

Moore missed the clash between the teams at the end of April when the Highlanders defended doggedly to secure a 23-10 win in Invercargill.

"We know this a great opportunity for us, we're excited to get out there," Moore said.

"We probably need a bit more variation in attack, we saw they contribute a lot of players to the breakdown.

"They forced us to play a lot and we probably played in the wrong parts of the field. We need to be a bit smarter about where we play, still take our opportunities where we see them.

"We know that if we don't win, it's the end of our season. Not really [a point to prove], we're doing it for many different reasons.

"I know for a fact we want to put in a good performance in front of our home crowd, we want to make it count."

The Brumbies stumbled in the last two rounds of the regular season, losing to the Auckland Blues and then failing to score a point in the second half against the Western Force last weekend.

But they did enough to book their play-off ticket and Larkham said the record against New Zealand teams counts for nothing when the finals begin.

"It's irrelevant now, isn't it? Your form prior to this game is irrelevant, it's what you put down on the paddock [in finals]," Larkham said.

"Any team still left can win the competition. We've copped criticism as Australian teams throughout the year, but it's all irrelevant now.

"Not a point to prove, it's just about playing well this weekend and the result will look after itself."
