The cult-hero winger dedicated the ACT Brumbies' charge into the play-offs to a girl he didn't even know, but was touched by her story just hours before kick-off against the Melbourne Rebels.

Speight scribbled the number seven on his wrist before the game as part of a tribute to the family of seven-year-old Belconnen child Jordan, who died after a fight with a brain tumour.

Speight is a crowd favourite not just because of the way he plays. He genuinely cares about Canberra and Brumbies fans.

"It's always hard when you hear of things like that," Speight said.

"Jordan was a girl of who died of a brain tumour earlier in the week and I heard about it before the game. So I wrote her age on my wrist to have her and her family in the back of my mind.

"It's a tough one. She was seven years old. It puts everything in perspective and even though I didn't know her, it knocks you back a bit. So my condolences are with her family."

The Brumbies secured their place in the Super Rugby finals when they beat the Rebels 32-3 at Canberra Stadium on Saturday night.

Speight's quick thinking set up their first try to break the shackles and set the Brumbies on the path to a season-defining victory.

The Brumbies will play in the Super Rugby finals for a fifth consecutive season and believe they can challenge for their first championship since 2004.

But first, Speight will be part of an eight-strong contingent of Brumbies who will join the Wallabies in camp for a three-Test series against Fiji, Scotland and Italy.

The opening Test against Fiji will have extra significance for Speight and Tevita Kuridrani as they prepare to play against their country of birth.

"It's going to be a big moment for the Fijian boys in the Wallabies squad and our families back home," Speight said.

"It's probably the first time we've had this many Fijians in the Wallabies squad and we'll all be putting our hands up for selection against Fiji because it would be great to be a part of.

"It's going to be a special week, I'm looking forward to it."

Speight injured his neck setting up the Brumbies' first try against the Rebels, but was cleared of any damage and walked away with slight stiffness.

He will headline the list of Brumbies chasing gold jerseys, with Kuridrani set to keep the No. 13 jersey after Samu Kerevi suffered an ankle injury.

Joe Powell will compete with Will Genia for the starting scrumhalf spot, Rory Arnold and Sam Carter will go head to head for a lock spot, Kyle Godwin looms as an inside centre option and Allan Alaalatoa could be thrown into tighthead prop.

Scott Sio is still recovering from a knee injury, but hopes to be fit for the second Test against Scotland in Sydney.

Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham doubles as a Wallabies assistant and hoped Super Rugby form would be rewarded with Test selection.

"There's obviously going to be a couple of selection meetings in the next couple of days and I'll be pushing as hard as I can [for them]," Larkham said.
