Lealiifano is nearing the end of his stint in Melbourne as part of his treatment for leukaemia and it is hoped doctors will give him clearance to move back to Canberra as early as this weekend.

The ACT Brumbies co-captain's leukaemia diagnosis rocked the Australian rugby community last year and triggered a flow of support for one of rugby's most popular players.

Rebels coach Tony McGahan revealed the club reached out Lealiifano, despite being one of their Australian rivals, to offer support in anyway they could.

That included the Rebels and the Victorian Rugby Union, a Melbourne junior, opening the doors to their training facilities if Lealiifano wanted to use them while he was in town.

Some Rebels players visited Lealiifano, including hooker James Hanson who took Lealiifano to watch Rafael Nadal play at the Australian Open last month.

"We're obviously wishing him all the best, everyone in Australian rugby is right behind him and hoping for the best," McGahan said.

"The club has been in contact with him and so have a number of the players. Of course he was welcome to use our base if he wanted and we put that out there."

Lealiifano will be a source of inspiration for the Brumbies when they start their Super Rugby campaign against the Canterbury Crusaders on February 25.

There is still hope that Lealiifano will play a role on the field this year, but he is unable to start training until six months after his bone-marrow transplant.

Lealiifano will instead take on some of the coaching duties and be a mentor to some of the club's young stars, who will be thrust into the Super Rugby cauldron in his absence.

"Everything is on track for Christian, I think he's had his central line taken out and is coming up to the 100 days in Melbourne," said Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham.

"He'll be in and around the boys as much as possible from then onwards. Everything is on track for the next stage of his treatment and recovery.

"It was a great offer from the Rebels. The beauty of where Christian is at the moment is that he can come home and settle into things back here."

Former Brumby and NSW Waratahs captain Michael Hooper added: "Everyone wants the best for Christian, he's such a lovely bloke and a great mate. Everyone's got him in their prayers."

Wharenui Hawera appears to be the front-runner to fill Lealiifano's No. 10 jersey for the opening rounds of Super Rugby while Kyle Godwin will likely start at inside centre.

The Brumbies will be without more than 500 games of Super Rugby experience when they star their campaign with Lealiifano out of action and Stephen Moore (Queensland), Matt Toomua (England), David Pocock (sabbatical) and Joe Tomane (France) all moving on.

The Brumbies will host a fan day at the University of Canberra on Saturday at 10.30am to give supporters a chance to meet the players.
