Smith will equal Brumbies legend George Gregan on Saturday night as the club's most capped player when he runs on for his 136th Super Rugby match.

And with his immediate Brumbies future locked in until the end of the season, Smith is also set for a return to the Wallabies, pending approval from his Japanese club Suntory.

The 110-Test veteran met with Wallabies coach Robbie Deans last weekend and wants to be considered for selection in the British and Irish Lions series in June and July.

Deans was in Canberra on Tuesday to cast his eye over Smith and the Brumbies' Test contenders, but it's understood the ARU is yet to get a clearance from Suntory.

David Pocock's season-ending injury has opened the door for Smith to play a major role in what would be his second series against the Lions.

But while many rank him as the best No.7 in Australia, the 32-year-old believes he needs to keep improving.

''I'm pleased with the way I'm going so far, but I need to be doing a lot more on the field … the missed tackles and the penalty count, there are a lot of little areas I have to fix up,'' Smith said.

''I did retire [from Wallabies duties] in 2010 and I don't want to deceive people in saying that I'm just coming back for the Lions series.

''It's a huge occasion for the Wallabies … it's a huge honour to play for the Wallabies and I'd like to be considered for that series, but first there has to be an approach from the ARU to Suntory for me to get a clearance.''

Smith and Deans spoke in Brisbane after the Brumbies' 19-19 draw with the Queensland Reds.

It was the first time the pair had spoken since Smith joined the Brumbies in February. Suntory has given clearance for him to stay with the Brumbies for the rest of the season and play in any potential finals campaign.

But it's understood the ARU will need another clearance and to arrange insurance cover for Smith's lucrative deal with Suntory if he's to play any part in the Lions series.

Smith gave Deans the Suntory contact details, but no approach has been made yet.

Smith was planning a family holiday in June but will now switch his focus to international rugby if he's given the all clear.

Deans was in the capital as part of his regular visits to the Australian franchises.

The Brumbies' impressive form has catapulted a number of players into Test contention, including Fotu Auelua, Ben Mowen, Jesse Mogg and Smith.

Smith had originally planned a holiday with his family before joining Suntory for the pre-season.

''Initially I was going to have a good go at Super Rugby again and test myself as a player, I feel I've done that now,'' Smith said.

''It's great to get a clearance for the Brumbies and if there was a Wallabies call-up, I'd be very happy.

''At the moment there are just some little details in my own game that I have to fix.''
