But Larkham is reluctant to back a rugby union State of Origin concept because of uncertainty surrounding eligibility and its timing before the Super Rugby finals campaign.

Larkham was part of a Fox Sports "roadshow" tour to all of Australia's rugby franchises to outline the broadcaster's hopes of reinvigorating interest in the competition.

A confusing Super Rugby format, the introduction of new teams and axing an Australian home-and-away series has affected rugby's popularity.

A State of Origin match has been mooted as a way to add new content and attract new fans while Fox Sports wants clubs to open their doors on game-day.

One of the proposals is for usually relaxed Larkham to be tracked during the game to see how the former Wallaby handles the pressure in his final season as a Super Rugby coach.

Larkham has backed all ideas to give supporter's at the ground and at home a better game-day experience, but he is wary of a State of Origin game that could disrupt championship dreams.

NSW and Queensland officials are gathering information for a potential Origin debut on June 29.

"From my perspective, I'm still not sure of the format," Larkham said.

"If you're born in Queensland or NSW, but what about if you're born in Canberra or anywhere else? I assume that means you can't play in that game.

"Are they saying the only rugby players that are worth watching come out of NSW and Queensland? I'm not sure.

"That Wallaby window is already eating into Super Rugby time and preparation time in terms of player fatigue, so from a Brumbies perspective, I just don't see the benefit of it right now."

Coaching rivals Daryl Gibson and Nick Stiles have called for changes to the Super Rugby format to ensure Australian teams play each other twice every season.

The Brumbies play Gibson's NSW Waratahs once in Sydney this year and not hosting the traditionally big-drawing contest will be a financial hit.

The Waratahs play the Brumbies and the Queensland Reds once each, denying Australian rugby some of its blockbuster derbies.

"It's a real shame. There's a lot of talk about this State of Origin and getting extra content, which I fully endorse," Gibson said at the season launch in Brisbane.

"I believe if there's a weekend free in the calendar, it would be great if we could come up with something. But in my view, the reason we're having this discussion is because we've eroded the derbies.

"To not go to Canberra and play the Brumbies, it hurts both the Brumbies and the Waratahs. We want to make sure it's one of our biggest rivalries, along with Queensland.

"For me, I wonder if we've quite got that right in Australia, we're probably hurting ourselves. You need a hero and a villain and I think it's important that is fostered, but it can't happen if you only play against each other once."

Reds coach Stiles added: "You'd love to see a home-and-away against the Australian provinces. I think you'd get that answer in Australia, South Africa or New Zealand.

"You want to see games against local teams because there's a lot of history there. So I'd like to see that come back into the competition."

The ARU used the season launch in Brisbane on Monday to announce a four-year deal with Vodafone as the naming rights sponsor of the Australian Super Rugby matches.

Super Rugby powerbrokers will meet in March to discuss the competition's format and whether an Australian team will be axed.
