The Cape Times has reported that White has applied to be the director of rugby at the University of Stellenbosch, about 50km from Cape Town.

White had been linked with coaching jobs at the Stormers and the Sharks.

While the Sharks are interested in speaking with the South African World Cup winner, the Stormers have shut the door on White joining the club.

Western Province Rugby Union president Thelo Wakefield told The Cape Times his organisation wouldn't be contacting White about working with either the Stormers or their second-tier affiliate, Western Province.

''Jake White is not in our plans,'' Wakefield said.

''We haven't spoken to him and there have definitely not been any meetings with him.

''We are not looking at Jake White at all.''

Accepting the role with the University of Stellenbosch would prevent potentially messy negotiations with the Brumbies to allow White to coach in Super Rugby.

The Brumbies have the right to stop White from coaching against them next season and could keep him out of action for the next 18 months.

White was required to give the Brumbies' 18 months notice if he wanted to be released from his contract early.

However, he informed the Brumbies last Friday of his desire to remain in South Africa, with the release from the final two years of his deal officially granted six days later.

White was an assistant coach at the Sharks in 2000, but left as part of a clear-out after a disastrous season.

Since then, he has won the World Cup with the Springboks in 2007 and remains a sought-after figure in his native country.

Despite being overlooked for the Wallabies job in favour of Ewen McKenzie, White's reputation soared after transforming the Brumbies from a basket case to grand finalists in the space of two years.

The Brumbies are set to appoint either a four- or five-man sub-committee to find his replacement, but club great Joe Roff won't be part of it.

Roff has removed himself from the process because of his friendship with championship-winning teammate, and coaching candidate, Stephen Larkham.

Cricket Australia high performance director Pat Howard is set to take his spot, alongside Brumbies chief executive Andrew Fagan, chairman Sean Hammond and inaugural captain Brett Robinson.

Howard played for both the Brumbies and Wallabies, has previously served on the Brumbies board and was on the sub-committee which appointed White in 2011.

Discussions will begin within the next seven to 10 days, but no deadline has been set for a new coach to be put in place.

The Brumbies are comfortable with Larkham and fellow assistant coach Laurie Fisher overseeing the start of pre-season training in the middle of next month if a coach hasn't been appointed.

Larkham and Fisher are the front-runners for the position.

Former Brumby Jim Williams is understood to be interested, while sacked Wallabies coach Robbie Deans is still looking for a job.

Stirling Mortlock played alongside Larkham and was the captain of the Brumbies when Fisher was head coach from 2005-08.

Mortlock believed the decision was too close to call and the Brumbies wouldn't lose in whatever direction they went.

''Both are well versed in their own coaching capacity,'' Mortlock said.

''Laurie is an outstanding forwards coach and his ability to be really clear and proficient in the breakdown is outstanding.

''Laurie was pretty good with his communication with the playing group and trying to get the best out of everyone.

''Stephen has one of the best rugby brains going around.

''As an assistant coach he's done exceptionally well with the guys at his disposal. He was always a player that was willing to look further in depth and beyond the type of analysis that a normal player would do.''
