Media reports have suggested the 25-year-old is on his way to the land of the rising sun among a raft of foreign players.
Smith made his Super Rugby debut with the Western Force in 2012 before joining the Brumbies' extended playing squad in 2013.
He has made 42 appearances in his three seasons with the Brumbies primarily as a back-up to Wallabies duo Ben Alexander and Scott Sio.
The Brumbies declined to comment when contacted by Fairfax Media.
It is unclear whether Smith will be returning to the Brumbies next season.
Smith's speculated move to Japan comes after his twin brother signed a deal to return to South Africa to join Western Province for this year's Currie Cup.
Jean-Pierre Smith, also a prop, has played 24 games for the Brumbies after making his debut in 2014.
The Smith brothers immigrated to Australia from South Africa at the end of 2010.
Toyota Verblitz have also been linked with Waratahs veteran Wycliff Palu, North Harbour's Robbie Robinson, Sam Bernstrom from the Sydney Roosters and Renaldo Bothma from the Sharks.
