But the Brumbies co-captain urged officials to make a decision on the way the television match official is used after tries to avoid having players caught in the crossfire of a murky World Rugby protocol.

The blowtorch is set to be turned on the way teams are taking quick conversion attempts after scoring tries to prevent the TMO from reviewing the play and potentially overturning decisions of the on-field referee.

It happened twice in the Brumbies' 30-22 win against the Melbourne Rebels on Friday night, benefiting both teams at different stages of a tense Australian derby.

World Rugby protocols state that the TMO or the referee can review the play leading up to a try at any point before the goalkicker takes the conversion attempt.

Teams are now aware of a grey area that allows them to take a quick drop-goal shot to end the process before video replays are available to the officials.

Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham says Super Rugby officials must act and change the interpretation before it has a major bearing on the finals campaign or an international Test.

Larkham's preference is for the laws to be changed to allow the TMO or referee to review the try-scoring play regardless of whether a conversion has been attempted.

Lealiifano, who has been thrust into the uncertainty, believes there is an opportunity for officials to introduce a captain's challenge similar to tennis' review system to allow teams to ask for certain tries to be reviewed.

"It's the way the game is, the TMO plays a big part in tries and gets to look at a lot of things. It's frustrating at times," Lealiifano said.

"If the ref makes a decision, I think you've got to back that. Unless you've got a referral from the opposition captain, that might be better.

"I don't know. But at the moment the TMO is looking at everything and it halts momentum, it's frustrating. You worry about everything and try to rush kicks. It puts more pressure on, rather than enjoying the try celebration.

"As a kicker you want to take the time allocated and it's frustrating when you worry about things in the lead-up. The officials aren't superhuman, but we've got to have enough faith in them to make the right decision.

A similar incident denied the NSW Waratahs a bonus point try last weekend and Wallabies playmaker Bernard Foley admitted afterwards he didn't know of the loophole allowing kickers to take a shot at goal to prevent the TMO from reviewing play.

In the first half of the Brumbies-Rebels eight-try thriller, Lealiifano scored off what appeared to be a forward pass from James Dargaville, but took a quick drop-goal conversion before referee Rohan Hoffmann or the TMO had time to review it.

In the second half, with the game on the line, Hoffmann awarded a try to Brumbies prop Allan Alaalatoa and said he was happy that there was no knock-on in the lead-up to the five-pointer.

Lealiifano took his time lining up his shot and it came back to bite the Brumbies, with replays showing a knock-on and Hoffmann stopping play just as Lealiifano was about to boot the ball into the stands.

The grey area is not that the TMO can interject to check play leading up to a try; it is that he can be prevented from taking a look at replays if a goalkicker can get boot to ball immediately after a suspect try.

Larkham was filthy at himself for not sending a message to Lealiifano quick enough to tell him to attempt another drop-goal conversion after Alaalatoa's try.

The former Wallabies flyhalf hopes the issue can be changed and cleared up before an incident has a bearing on Super Rugby finals, or a Test match.

"If there's something legitimate there, then you probably just have to bite the bullet and say let's go back two phases whether he kicks the goal or not," Larkham said.

"That's the way the rule was originally supposed to be interpreted. But now it's a loophole. They need to tighten it up before the end of the season; irrespective of whether the goal's kicked they go back and check it."

The Brumbies bounced back to form despite the TMO controversy, recording back-to-back wins for the first time since March to get their finals hopes on track.

They have just four regular-season games remaining, but are in control of their play-off destiny as they jostle with the NSW Waratahs and the Rebels for Australia's guaranteed finals berth.

Players from the Brumbies and Rebels were called into a Wallabies team meeting in Melbourne on Saturday, as Test coach Michael Cheika continues his preparations for the three-Test series against England next month.

Alaalatoa is on the radar for a Test debut, while Joseph Tomane and Matt Toomua were part of the planning session despite being injured.

The Brumbies have a bye next week before taking on the Japan Sunwolves in Canberra going into a three-week, midyear bye for the Wallabies' series against England..
