But the Argentina international hopes he can have an immediate impact and form a scrumhalf tag-team with Joe Powell when he makes his comeback on Friday night.

Powell's rise has been the silver lining to Cubelli's four-month injury absence but they will join forces for a charge to the Super Rugby finals.

It could be the final weeks of their combination as Cubelli mulls a decision on his future, but it is expected he will leave the Brumbies at the end of the year and Matt Lucas will replace him.

Cubelli ruptured his patellar tendon in a trial match against the NSW Waratahs in Mudgee three weeks before the start of the Super Rugby campaign.

"I'm still working on a decision [on my future], my focus is putting my energy into coming back to be available to play and make a decision after that," Cubelli said.

"I was worried I was going to lose the whole season [when I got injured], but I have to thank all the medical staff at the Brumbies and the surgeon because I came back after four months."

The Brumbies will welcome back Cubelli when they play the Queensland Reds at Suncorp Stadium in the penultimate game of the regular season.

His presence on the bench is a major boost for the Brumbies' title hopes and Cubelli is determined to ensure he finishes an injury-ruined year on a high.

Cubelli has been the starting scrumhalf in all but one of his 15 games for the Brumbies, but was excited at the opportunity to be a second-half spark in his return to Super Rugby.

"I'm really excited to be involved with the group in a Super Rugby week again," Cubelli said.

"It's been a long time ... long injuries are pretty disappointing so I tried to do my best in those months to be ready and available for the team in the last games.

"I'm happy I could make it. We're called 'the Wolves', the guys who [come off the bench] in the last minutes.

"It's really exciting to try to finish the job the boys start. Joey is having a great season, I've enjoyed watching him play. I'm looking forward to make a good combination and try to take the Brumbies to the top."

The Brumbies have already secured a home final on July 21, but games against the Reds and Waikato Chiefs to end the regular season will be crucial for building momentum.

Cubelli will be joined by prop Ben Alexander on the bench, with the 32-year-old set to pass George Smith as the most-capped player in Brumbies history.

The clash against the Reds will be his 143rd game for the club after making his debut in 2008.

But the 72-Test Wallaby has his eyes on a bigger prize as he chases the first Super Rugby title of his career.

"We've got to get our momentum going again. The [milestone game] will mean a lot to me when it's all said and done and I've finished playing," Alexander said.

"But at the moment I haven't thought about it other than it being a huge honour.

"We're well and truly focused on getting ready for our finals campaign, and that starts against a really big forward pack at the Reds.

"Any time you make the finals is a golden opportunity ... generally the team that's healthiest at this time of year wins."
