Live coverage: Brumbies vs Waratahs

David Polkinghorne

Preamble: Join David "Polky" Polkinghorne for the bitter rivalry clash as the Brumbies host the Waratahs.

Final Word: Seems like Lealiifano has a season-ending ankle injury. Brumbies coach Jake White unsure of the full extent just yet.

80 min: Terrible scenes as Christian Lealiifano stretchered off after the siren with a suspected compound fracture of his leg.

80 min: And the ball is sent into the crowd much to the delight of the Brumbies fans. 23-6 the final score. The home side getting on top after a tight, scrappy start. Tries to Speight and Smith wrapped it up and it's time for the locals to sing the song...

79 min: Great run by Joe Tomane and the crowd now rocking out to some Van Halen as they're about to savour this victory, despite Lealiifano's missed penalty...

74 min: The Waratahs now pressing after Lealiifano made it 23-6. Brumbies captain Ben Mowen given a yellow card. But looks like too little too late as pressured is eased...

66 min: 19,122 have come out tonight. Not a bad effort Canberra but I think you can do better as this season continues to build. Lealiifano misses a penalty attempt...

60 min: Welcome back Rocky Elsom! Finally some heart-felt booing from the Canberrans! And another chorus! We love you Rocky!

50 min: Massive roost by White! The beard and his kick like a mule brings back memories of Grizzly Adams...

44 min: The Brumbies forward pack press and press like your local dry cleaner before spreading it wide and Andrew Smith dives over to give the home side a comfortable lead. Lealiifano back in the kicking groove adds the extras, 20-6.

Second half: And the Tahs welcomed back to some half-hearted boos. A few changes for the Brumbies - Alexander off for Murphy and McCabe blood-binned, with Kuridrani replacing him...

40 min: Thank you Henry! Speight dances a lovely jig that leaves a trail of blue bodies in his wake and the  Brumbies will head to the sheds in front. Speight is in a purple patch at the moment and it's 13-6 to the home side.

38 min: Back square, 6-all, but Brumbies have last chance to take a lead into half-time...

37 min: Feeble attempt to drive the scrum over the line by the Waratahs. Scrummaging just isn't what it used to be...

Nasty knock to the head for the Waratahs' beard enthusiast, Tatafu Polota-Nau, and he's taking a break on pine...

Brumbies back in front in this penalty armwrestle, 6-3, but now pressing the Tahs line. But they give away a penalty. Tragedy, was all set up for a Scott Fardy burrow...

Followed up by some argie bargie from beard-lover White. The full moon and cold conditions really make it ideal for bearded players to shine...

Now the Brumbies bearded ones are getting involved, that brings the crowd alive! Scott Fardy charges forward and then former beard grower Henry Speight makes a break. That's what the crowd was waiting for...

Scores are level! Bigger cheer for the Waratahs score. Canberrans waiting for something to get excited about maybe?

Some very polite clapping from the Brumbies fans as they take a 3-0 lead. I thought this was THE rivalry in Super Rugby...

Brumbies kicking woes continue as Nick White takes a penalty from about halfway, was as short and wide as a character out of The Hobbit. But don't fret, they've got another chance for points with Christian Lealiifano having a turn.

Massive roar greets the kick-off and it hasn't taken long for the Brumbies to force the Waratahs into a mistake, scrum on the halfway line...

Hello from a very balmy Canberra Stadium! Not a bad crowd in already, although a ways to go to the wanted 20,000 for the Brumbies' massive clash against arch rivals, the NSW Waratahs. Less than 10 minutes to kick off and most of the pies in the media box have already been eaten...
